Image 5.1: The three types of coffee preparation supported by the Dualit Espressivo: ground coffee, ESE pods, and NX capsules.

5.1 Making Espresso with Ground Coffee

  • Ensure the machine is powered on and the "Coffee Ready" indicator light is solid.
  • Insert the appropriate ground coffee filter basket (single or double shot) into the portafilter.
  • Add finely ground espresso coffee to the filter basket. For a single shot, use one level scoop (approx. 7g); for a double shot, use two level scoops (approx. 14g).
  • Lightly tamp the coffee with the flat end of the measuring scoop. Ensure the coffee is level and not over-tamped.
  • Wipe any excess coffee from the rim of the portafilter.
  • Attach the portafilter to the group head by aligning it and twisting firmly to the right until secure.
  • Place one or two espresso cups on the drip tray beneath the portafilter spouts.
  • Turn the Control Dial to the "Coffee" position. Press the Coffee button. Espresso will begin to flow.
  • Once the desired volume of espresso is reached (typically 25-30ml per shot), press the Coffee button again to stop the flow.
  • Turn the Control Dial back to the "Standby" position.
  • Carefully remove the portafilter by twisting it to the left. Dispose of the used coffee grounds.

5.2 Making Espresso with ESE Pods

  • Ensure the machine is powered on and the "Coffee Ready" indicator light is solid.
  • Insert the ESE pod filter basket into the portafilter.
  • Place one ESE pod centrally into the filter basket. Do not use two pods.
  • Attach the portafilter to the group head by aligning it and twisting firmly to the right until secure.
  • Place an espresso cup on the drip tray beneath the portafilter spout.
  • Turn the Control Dial to the "Coffee" position. Press the Coffee button. Espresso will begin to flow.
  • Once the desired volume of espresso is reached, press the Coffee button again to stop the flow.
  • Turn the Control Dial back to the "Standby" position.
  • Carefully remove the portafilter. Dispose of the used ESE pod.

5.3 Making Espresso with NX Capsules

  • Ensure the machine is powered on and the "Coffee Ready" indicator light is solid.
  • Insert the NX capsule filter basket into the portafilter.
  • Place one NX capsule into the filter basket.

  • Fill a stainless steel frothing jug with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy) to just below the spout.
  • Ensure the machine is powered on. Turn the Control Dial to the "Steam" position. The steam indicator light will flash while heating, then become solid when ready.
  • Position the steam wand just below the surface of the milk in the jug.
  • Slowly open the steam valve by turning the steam knob. Steam will be released.
  • Move the jug slowly up and down, keeping the steam wand just below the surface to create foam, then deeper to heat the milk.
  • Once the milk reaches the desired temperature and consistency (approximately 60-70°C), close the steam valve and turn the Control Dial back to "Standby".
  • Immediately wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth to prevent milk residue from drying. Purge a small amount of steam to clear any internal blockages.

6. Cleaning and Maintenance

Regular cleaning and maintenance will ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your coffee machine.

6.1 Daily Cleaning

  • Drip Tray: Empty and rinse the drip tray after each use or when the indicator floats up.
  • Portafilter and Filter Baskets: Remove and rinse thoroughly after each use. Use the cleaning tool to clear any coffee residue from the filter holes.
  • Steam Wand: Wipe immediately after frothing milk. Purge steam to clear internal residue.
  • Exterior: Wipe the machine's exterior with a soft, damp cloth.

6.2 Descaling

Descaling is essential to remove mineral buildup and maintain machine performance. The frequency depends on water hardness and usage, but generally every 2-3 months.

  • Use a descaling solution specifically designed for coffee machines. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the descaling solution.
  • Fill the water reservoir with the descaling solution mixed with water according to instructions.
  • Place a large container under the portafilter and steam wand.
  • Run half of the solution through the coffee spout by turning the Control Dial to "Coffee" and pressing the Coffee button. Stop the flow.
  • Run the remaining half of the solution through the steam wand by turning the Control Dial to "Steam" and opening the steam valve. Close the valve.
  • Turn off the machine and let it sit for 15-20 minutes.
  • Rinse the water reservoir and fill it with fresh water.
  • Repeat the process of running water through both the coffee spout and steam wand to thoroughly rinse the machine. Repeat rinsing with fresh water at least twice.
