Motorola HKN6184C USB Programming Cable User Manual

For MOTOTRBO, XPR, XTL, and APX Series Radios

1. Introduction

This manual provides instructions for the proper use and care of your Motorola HKN6184C USB Programming Cable. This cable is designed to facilitate communication between a computer and compatible Motorola MOTOTRBO, XPR, XTL, and APX series mobile radios for programming and firmware updates. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the cable to ensure safe and efficient operation.

2. Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions:

  • Do not expose the cable to water or excessive moisture.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures.
  • Do not attempt to modify or disassemble the cable. This will void any warranty and may cause damage.
  • Use the cable only with compatible Motorola radios as specified in this manual.
  • Ensure proper grounding of your computer and radio equipment during programming to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD).
  • Disconnect the cable from both the computer and radio when not in use.

3. Product Overview

The Motorola HKN6184C is a USB programming cable designed for reliable data transfer between your computer and various Motorola mobile radios. It features a standard USB Type-A connector for the computer end and a proprietary connector for the radio's control head GCAI port.

4. Setup Instructions

Before connecting the programming cable, ensure you have the correct programming software (Customer Programming Software - CPS) installed on your computer for your specific radio model. Note: Programming software is not included with this cable.

4.1 Driver Installation

  1. Connect the USB Type-A end of the HKN6184C cable to an available USB port on your computer.
  2. Your operating system may automatically detect and install the necessary USB drivers. If not, you may need to manually install drivers provided by Motorola or your cable vendor. Refer to your computer's device manager to verify successful driver installation (the cable should appear under "Ports (COM & LPT)" or "Universal Serial Bus controllers").
  3. Note the assigned COM port number, as this will be required for configuring your programming software.

4.2 Connecting to the Radio

  1. Ensure the radio is powered off before connecting the programming cable.
  2. Locate the GCAI connector on the front control head of your Motorola mobile radio. This is typically a multi-pin port.
  3. Carefully align the proprietary connector of the HKN6184C cable with the radio's GCAI port and insert it firmly. Do not force the connection.
  4. Once connected, you may power on the radio.

5. Operating Instructions

This section outlines the general procedure for programming your radio using the HKN6184C cable. Specific steps may vary depending on your radio model and the version of the Customer Programming Software (CPS) you are using.

  1. Connect the Cable: Follow the steps in Section 4.2 to connect the cable to your computer and radio.
  2. Launch CPS: Open the appropriate Motorola Customer Programming Software (CPS) on your computer.
  3. Configure COM Port: Within the CPS, navigate to the communication settings or preferences. Select the COM port number that was assigned to your HKN6184C cable during driver installation (refer to Section 4.1).
  4. Read Radio Data: With the radio powered on and connected, use the "Read Radio" or "Get Radio Data" function within the CPS to retrieve the current configuration from your radio. This step is crucial to ensure you have a backup of the existing settings.
  5. Modify Settings: Make the necessary programming changes within the CPS.
  6. Write to Radio: Once your modifications are complete, use the "Write to Radio" or "Program Radio" function in the CPS to upload the new configuration to your radio. Follow any on-screen prompts.
  7. Disconnect: After successful programming, close the CPS, power off the radio, and then carefully disconnect the programming cable from both the radio and the computer.

Important Considerations:

  • Ensure your computer's battery is fully charged or connected to a power source during programming to prevent interruptions.
  • Do not disconnect the cable or power off the radio/computer during a programming operation, as this can corrupt the radio's firmware.
  • Always back up your radio's current configuration before making any changes.

6. Maintenance

Proper maintenance will extend the life of your programming cable.

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the cable and connectors. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the cable in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid tightly coiling the cable or placing heavy objects on it to prevent damage to the internal wires.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the cable for any signs of wear, cuts, or bent pins on the connectors. If damage is observed, discontinue use and replace the cable.
