Protimeter Protimeter Mini

Protimeter Mini General Purpose Moisture Meter User Manual

Model: Protimeter Mini

1. Introduction

The Protimeter Mini is a precision, digital moisture meter designed for a wide range of general-purpose moisture detection applications. This robust instrument features built-in pin probes and is suitable for quick assessments of moisture conditions in various building materials, including timber, masonry, drywall, plaster, and concrete. It is also utilized for quality control in manufacturing and storage environments for wood products.

The instrument's fine-point measuring pins allow for surface measurements with minimal marking. The clear, color-coded LED display provides an immediate assessment of moisture levels: green for dry, yellow for borderline, and red for wet. Numerical values on the display indicate the actual percentage moisture content (% MC) for wood and the wood moisture equivalent (WME) for other materials.

3.2 Battery Installation

The Protimeter Mini operates on a 9-volt battery. To install or replace the battery:

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit.
  2. Slide or unclip the cover to open.
  3. Insert a new 9-volt alkaline battery, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Replace the battery compartment cover securely.

3.3 Initial Calibration Check

Before first use, and periodically thereafter, verify the meter's calibration using the supplied calibration check device:

  1. Turn on the Protimeter Mini by pressing the power button.
  2. Remove the protective cap from the pins.
  3. Gently press the meter's pins into the two small holes on the calibration check device.
  4. The meter should display a reading of approximately 18% WME (Wood Moisture Equivalent) and illuminate the yellow LED. If the reading is significantly different, contact customer support.

4. Operation

4.1 Taking a Measurement

  1. Ensure the meter is turned on.
  2. Remove the protective cap from the pins.
  3. Press the pins firmly into the material to be measured. Ensure both pins penetrate the surface to obtain an accurate reading.
  4. Observe the LED display. The illuminated LED indicates the moisture level:
    • Green Zone: Indicates dry conditions.
    • Yellow Zone: Indicates borderline moisture levels.
    • Red Zone: Indicates wet conditions, requiring further investigation.
  5. The numerical scale provides the percentage moisture content for wood or the wood moisture equivalent for other materials.
  6. Release the pins from the material. The reading will hold briefly before resetting.
  7. Replace the protective cap after use to prevent damage to the pins.

4.2 Using the Extension Pin Probe

For measurements in awkward positions or deeper penetration, use the supplied extension pin probe:

  1. Locate the universal pin port on the side of the Protimeter Mini.
  2. Plug the extension pin probe lead into this port.
  3. The meter will now take readings through the extension probe instead of the built-in pins.
  4. Insert the pins of the extension probe into the material and read the display as described above.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning

Wipe the instrument with a clean, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the pins are clean and free of debris before and after each use.

5.2 Pin Replacement

The measuring pins may become dull or damaged over time. Replace them using the spare pins provided:

  1. Ensure the meter is turned off.
  2. Carefully unscrew the old pins using a small wrench or pliers.
  3. Screw in the new pins firmly, but do not overtighten.

5.3 Storage

Store the Protimeter Mini in its protective pouch in a cool, dry place when not in use. Always replace the protective cap over the pins to prevent injury and damage.

6. Troubleshooting
