Introduction
This instruction manual provides detailed guidance for the proper use and maintenance of the LaMotte SL-26 DPD Chlorine Test Kit, Model 3308-01. This kit is designed for accurate measurement of free, total, and combined chlorine levels in water samples, with a measurement range of 0.2 to 3.0 ppm (parts per million) chlorine. Following these instructions will help ensure reliable test results.
Kit Components
The LaMotte SL-26 DPD Chlorine Test Kit (Model 3308-01) includes the following items:
- DPD Free Chlorine TesTabs
- DPD Total Chlorine TesTabs
- Octa-Slide 2 Comparator
- Test Tubes with caps
- Instruction Manual
- Durable carrying case

Setup
Before beginning any tests, ensure your work area is clean and free from contaminants that could interfere with the test results. Gather all necessary kit components: the Octa-Slide 2 Comparator, DPD TesTabs (Free and Total Chlorine), and a clean water sample to be tested. Rinse the test tubes thoroughly with the water sample before use to prevent cross-contamination.
Operating Instructions
Follow these steps carefully to measure chlorine levels in your water sample.
A. Free Chlorine Test
- Fill Test Tube: Fill one test tube to the 10 mL line with the water sample to be tested.
- Add Reagent: Add one DPD Free Chlorine TesTab to the water sample in the test tube.
- Dissolve Tablet: Cap the test tube and shake gently until the tablet is completely dissolved.
- Wait: Wait for approximately 1 minute for the color to develop.
- Compare Color: Insert the test tube into the left opening of the Octa-Slide 2 Comparator. Hold the comparator up to a light source (e.g., natural daylight) and compare the color of the sample with the color standards on the comparator.
- Record Result: Identify the closest color match and record the corresponding Free Chlorine concentration in ppm.
B. Total Chlorine Test
To measure Total Chlorine, use the same sample from the Free Chlorine test.
- Add Reagent: To the same test tube used for the Free Chlorine test, add one DPD Total Chlorine TesTab.
- Dissolve Tablet: Cap the test tube and shake gently until the tablet is completely dissolved.
- Wait: Wait for approximately 2-3 minutes for the color to develop.
- Compare Color: Insert the test tube into the left opening of the Octa-Slide 2 Comparator. Hold the comparator up to a light source and compare the color of the sample with the color standards.
- Record Result: Identify the closest color match and record the corresponding Total Chlorine concentration in ppm.
C. Combined Chlorine Calculation
Combined Chlorine is calculated by subtracting the Free Chlorine reading from the Total Chlorine reading.
Combined Chlorine (ppm) = Total Chlorine (ppm) - Free Chlorine (ppm)
Reading Results
The Octa-Slide 2 Comparator features a series of color standards representing different chlorine concentrations. To read your results, hold the comparator so that natural light illuminates the color standards and your sample from above. Look down through the comparator and match the color of your treated water sample to the closest color standard. The number next to the matching color indicates the chlorine concentration in parts per million (ppm).
Maintenance
- Cleaning Test Tubes: After each use, rinse test tubes thoroughly with clean water. Use a brush if necessary to remove any residue. Allow them to air dry completely before storing.
- Comparator Care: Keep the Octa-Slide 2 Comparator clean and free of scratches. Wipe with a soft, damp cloth if needed. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
- Reagent Storage: Store DPD TesTabs in their original blister packs in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Ensure the packs are sealed until use to maintain reagent integrity.
- Kit Storage: Store the entire kit in its carrying case in a cool, dry environment to protect components from damage and degradation.
Troubleshooting
- No Color Development: Ensure the DPD TesTab was added and fully dissolved. Check the expiration date of the reagents. If expired, use fresh reagents.
- Faint or Unusual Color: This could indicate very low chlorine levels, expired reagents, or interference from other substances in the water. Ensure proper sample collection and reagent handling.
- Difficulty Matching Color: Ensure adequate lighting when using the comparator. Avoid direct sunlight which can cause glare. If the color is between two standards, estimate the value.
- Inconsistent Results: Repeat the test with a fresh sample and new reagents. Ensure test tubes are clean and free of residue. Verify proper technique for adding reagents and waiting for color development.
