5. Operation

5.1. Duplication Modes

The USBDUP12 offers two primary duplication modes and supports asynchronous copying for efficiency.

Diagram illustrating the duplication and erase modes of the StarTech.com USBDUP12. Duplication modes include Sector-by-Sector Copy and System & File Copy, with options for Synchronous and Asynchronous Copy. Erase modes include Quick Erase, Single-Pass Overwrite, and 3-Pass Overwrite, compliant with NIST SP 800-88 Rev 1.

Figure 4: Overview of available duplication and erase modes.

  1. System & File Copy: This mode copies partitions and stored data, ignoring empty space. It is faster for drives with significant empty space and supports FAT16/32, NTFS, Linux ext2, ext3, and ext4 formats.
  2. Whole Drive Sector-by-Sector Copy: This mode performs a mirror image duplication of the entire drive, including hidden data and empty sectors. It is ideal for capturing all data on the drive, regardless of format, but takes longer.
  3. Asynchronous Copy Mode: When enabled (for source content under 64 MB), this mode allows you to remove and replace a completed destination drive while other drives continue to copy, maximizing efficiency.

5.2. Erase Modes

The duplicator supports multiple erase modes to ensure data security.

  1. Quick Erase: This mode quickly removes partition tables and the initial portions of the disk, leaving it in an uninitialized state. Data may be recoverable with specialized software.
  2. Single-Pass Overwrite: This mode overwrites the entire drive with a single pass of data (e.g., zeros or random hex values), making data recovery more difficult.
  3. 3-Pass Overwrite: This mode performs the overwrite process three times, significantly reducing the possibility of data recovery.
  4. Secure Erase (NIST SP 800-88 Rev 1 Compliant): This mode utilizes erase functions executed by the drives themselves to overwrite sectors with zeros. This is considered a highly secure method, and any interruption will render the drive unresponsive.

5.3. General Usage

  1. Insert the source USB flash drive into the Source Drive Slot.
  2. Insert one or two destination USB flash drives into the Destination Drive Slots.
  3. Use the Menu Control Buttons to navigate the LCD menu and select your desired operation (Copy or Erase).
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm the operation.
  5. Monitor the LCD Display and Drive Status LEDs for progress and completion.

Figure 5: Compatibility details for USB flash drives and external media.

  • Drive Types: Supports USB 3.0/2.0 flash media thumb drives and USB External Storage (external USB devices may require their own power source).
  • External Media: SD and microSD cards are supported with the use of a USB adapter or card reader (sold separately).
  • File Systems: Supports FAT16/32, NTFS, Linux ext2, ext3, ext4 formats for System & File Copy. Whole-drive Sector-by-Sector Copy supports all file formats.
  • Drive Capacity: Supports cloning/duplication and erasing of USB drives up to 2 TB capacity. For duplication, the destination drive must be of equal or greater capacity than the source drive.

7. Maintenance

7.1. Firmware Updates

The firmware of the USBDUP12 is upgradeable to ensure compliance with future standards and to support new features. Firmware updates can be downloaded directly from the StarTech.com website.

8. Troubleshooting

  • Duplication/Erase Failure: Check the Drive Status LEDs. A solid red LED indicates an error. Ensure the destination drive has equal or greater capacity than the source drive for duplication. Verify that drives are properly seated in their slots.
  • Slow Speeds: Duplication speed is up to 1.5 GB/min. Actual speeds may vary depending on the flash media used. Ensure you are using high-quality USB drives.
  • Inaccessible Data After Duplication: Do not attempt to duplicate encrypted drives (e.g., Windows BitLocker-locked drives) as the duplicated data may become inaccessible or unreadable.
  • Device Not Powering On: Verify that the universal power adapter is securely connected to both the duplicator and a working electrical outlet. Check the power switch position.
