Setup

Before first use, it is crucial to clean and sanitize all parts that come into contact with breast milk. The Spectra S2 Plus is a single-user item. Using it with multiple users without proper sterilization may pose health risks and voids the warranty.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Clean and Sanitize: Disassemble all parts that will come into contact with breast milk (flanges, valves, bottles, backflow protectors). Wash them with warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Sanitize by boiling in water for 5 minutes or using a steam sterilizer. Ensure all parts are completely dry before assembly.
  2. Assemble Backflow Protector: Connect the two halves of the backflow protector.
  3. Attach Duckbill Valve: Firmly push the duckbill valve onto the bottom of the breast flange.
  4. Connect Bottle: Screw the collection bottle onto the bottom of the breast flange.
  5. Attach Tubing: Connect one end of the tubing to the backflow protector and the other end to the pump unit's air port.
  6. Power Connection: Plug the 12V charger into the pump unit and then into a power outlet.

Flange Sizing

Proper flange sizing is essential for comfort and effective milk expression. Measure your nipple diameter after a few minutes of pumping and add 2-3mm to find your ideal flange size. A flange that is too large or too small can cause discomfort and reduce milk output.

Operating Instructions

The Spectra S2 Plus offers customizable settings to match your individual needs and comfort.

Basic Operation

  1. Power On: Press the power button to turn on the pump. The display will illuminate.
  2. Initiate Let-down (Massage Mode): The pump starts in massage mode, characterized by a fast, shallow cycle. This mode helps stimulate milk ejection reflex. You can adjust the cycle speed and vacuum level in this mode using the '+' and '-' buttons.
  3. Switch to Expression Mode: Once milk begins to flow, press the massage/expression mode button (often indicated by a wavy line icon) to switch to expression mode. This mode uses slower, deeper cycles to efficiently express milk.
  4. Adjust Settings: In expression mode, adjust the vacuum level using the '+' and '-' buttons to find a comfortable yet effective suction. Adjust the cycle speed (how many times the pump sucks per minute) using the cycle button. Experiment to find settings that mimic your baby's natural suckling pattern and maximize milk output without discomfort.
  5. Single or Double Pumping: The pump supports both single and double pumping. Connect one or two collection kits as needed.
  6. Night Light: Use the night light button to illuminate the display and controls for nighttime pumping sessions.
  7. Auto-Timer: The built-in timer on the display helps you keep track of your pumping duration.
  8. Power Off: Press the power button again to turn off the pump when finished. The pump remembers your last settings for convenience.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Regular cleaning and maintenance are vital for the hygiene and longevity of your breast pump.

Daily Cleaning

Sanitization

Sanitize all milk-contacting parts at least once a day, or as recommended by your healthcare provider. This can be done by boiling the parts in water for 5 minutes or using a steam sterilizer.

Part Replacement

Over time, pump parts can wear out, affecting suction and efficiency. It is recommended to inspect and replace parts such as duckbill valves and backflow protectors every 2-3 months, or sooner if you notice a decrease in suction or visible damage.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Spectra S2 Plus pump, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No suction or weak suction
  • Parts not assembled correctly
  • Damaged or worn duckbill valve
  • Damaged or improperly assembled backflow protector
  • Tubing is kinked, detached, or damaged
  • Flange not sealed properly to breast
  • Ensure all parts are securely connected as per assembly instructions.
  • Inspect the duckbill valve for tears or stretching; replace if necessary.
  • Check the backflow protector for cracks or improper seal; reassemble or replace.
  • Straighten tubing, ensure it's firmly attached to both pump and backflow protector. Replace if damaged.
  • Adjust flange position to create a tight seal around the nipple and areola.
Pain or discomfort during pumping
  • Incorrect flange size
  • Suction level too high
  • Nipple not centered in flange tunnel
  • Re-evaluate flange size using the sizing guide.
  • Reduce the vacuum level until pumping is comfortable. Pumping should never be painful.
  • Ensure your nipple is centered in the flange tunnel before starting.
Low milk output
  • Incorrect pump settings
  • Worn pump parts
  • Stress or dehydration
  • Experiment with different cycle speeds and vacuum levels. Start with massage mode, then switch to expression mode with a comfortable vacuum and slower cycle.
  • Check duckbill valves and backflow protectors for wear and replace if needed.
  • Ensure adequate hydration and try to pump in a relaxed environment.
