5. Installation (Setup)
The OHLINS LEGEND TWIN S36PR1C1L rear suspension is designed for specific Honda CB400 series models, including CB400SF [NC31, NC39], CB400SF Revo [NC42], CB400SB [NC39], and CB400SB Revo [NC42].
- Preparation: Park the motorcycle on a stable, level surface. Use a suitable motorcycle stand to lift the rear wheel off the ground, ensuring the swingarm is free to move.
- Remove Original Shocks: Carefully remove the bolts securing the original rear shock absorbers at both the upper and lower mounting points. Retain all original hardware.
- Install OHLINS Shocks: Position the OHLINS LEGEND TWIN shocks. Install the upper mounting bolts first, then align and install the lower mounting bolts. Ensure any spacers or collars are correctly placed according to your motorcycle's specifications.
- Tighten Bolts: Hand-tighten all mounting bolts initially. Once both shocks are in place, refer to your motorcycle's service manual for the correct torque specifications for the upper and lower shock mounting bolts. Tighten them to the specified torque.
- Final Check: Lower the motorcycle from the stand. Check for proper clearance and ensure all components are securely fastened.
Note: Professional installation is highly recommended to ensure correct fitment and safety.

6. Adjustment (Operating)
The OHLINS LEGEND TWIN S36PR1C1L offers multiple adjustment options to fine-tune your motorcycle's handling characteristics.
6.1. Preload Adjustment
Preload adjusts the initial compression of the spring, affecting ride height and sag. Use the single nut stepless preload adjuster to increase or decrease spring compression. Increasing preload will raise the ride height and reduce sag, while decreasing it will lower the ride height and increase sag. Adjust in small increments and test the motorcycle's feel.
6.2. Rebound Damping Adjustment
Rebound damping controls the speed at which the shock absorber extends after compression. The S36PR1C1L features 30 steps of rebound adjustment. A higher setting (more clicks in) will slow down the rebound, providing more stability. A lower setting (more clicks out) will speed up the rebound, allowing the wheel to follow bumps more quickly. Adjust to prevent the rear wheel from 'pogo-sticking' or packing down.
6.3. Compression Damping Adjustment
Compression damping controls the speed at which the shock absorber compresses. This model offers 4 steps of compression adjustment. A higher setting will make the suspension feel firmer, resisting bottoming out. A lower setting will make it softer, absorbing small bumps more effectively. Adjust to balance comfort and control, avoiding harshness or excessive dive.
6.4. Ride Height Adjustment
The ride height can be adjusted within a range of +10mm to -0mm. This adjustment can subtly alter the motorcycle's geometry, affecting steering response and stability. Make small adjustments and evaluate the change in handling.
7. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity of your OHLINS rear suspension.
- Cleaning: Keep the shock absorbers clean from dirt, dust, and road grime. Use mild soap and water, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid high-pressure washers directly on seals.
- Inspection: Periodically inspect the shocks for any signs of oil leaks, damage to the shaft, springs, or mounting points. Check for loose bolts.
- Service: OHLINS shock absorbers require periodic servicing by an authorized OHLINS service center. Refer to the OHLINS website or your dealer for recommended service intervals.
8. Troubleshooting
If you experience issues with your suspension, consider the following:
- Poor Ride Quality: Check your preload, rebound, and compression settings. Ensure they are appropriate for your weight and riding style.
- Excessive Sag: Increase spring preload.
- Harsh Ride: Decrease compression damping or check for excessive preload.
- Bouncy Ride (Rear): Increase rebound damping.
- Bottoming Out: Increase compression damping or spring preload.
- Oil Leaks: If you observe oil leaks, discontinue use and contact an authorized OHLINS service center immediately.
