Setup
Follow these steps to set up your Fluval FX6 filter:
- Placement: Position the filter on a flat, stable surface directly below your aquarium. The compact design (21 inches / 53 cm in height) allows it to fit under most aquarium stands.
- Media Installation: Open the filter lid and carefully place the included filter media into the stackable media baskets. The FX6 utilizes a multi-stage filtration system with precision-engineered baskets to prevent water bypass. Ensure the foam inserts are correctly positioned for mechanical pre-filtering.
- Hose Connection: Connect the intake and output hoses to the filter unit using the Aquastop Click-Fit Valves. These valves ensure a leak-free and fast assembly. Secure hoses with the provided clamps.
- Aquarium Connection: Install the versatile intake and twin output nozzles inside your aquarium. The telescopic stem of the intake helps prevent clogging, and the multi-directional output nozzles allow for customized water currents.
- Priming: The FX6 features Smart Pump Technology for self-starting. Simply add water to the canister, plug in the unit, and the Smart Pump will automatically begin the priming process, evacuating trapped air.

Operating Instructions
Once set up, the Fluval FX6 operates efficiently with its integrated Smart Pump Technology:
- Automatic Operation: The Smart Pump continuously monitors and optimizes pump performance. It automatically evacuates trapped air every 12 hours to maintain maximum filtration efficiency.
- Flow Control: Adjust the flow rate as needed using the integrated valves on the filter lid.
- Quiet Operation: The advanced design and Smart Pump technology contribute to a quiet operating experience.

Maintenance
Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal filter performance and water quality:
- Media Basket Cleaning: The instant-release T-handles allow for quick and easy removal of media baskets. Clean the foam inserts and other media as needed. It is recommended to rinse mechanical media in old aquarium water to preserve beneficial bacteria.
- Water Changes: The FX6 simplifies water changes. Attach a hose to the utility valve on the filter and the Smart Pump will assist in draining water from your aquarium, eliminating the need to lift heavy buckets.
- Hose and Valve Inspection: Periodically inspect hoses, O-rings, and valves for wear and tear. Replace components as necessary to prevent leaks and maintain efficiency.

Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Fluval FX6 filter, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Reduced Water Flow | Clogged intake strainer or media, air trapped in system, kinked hoses. | Clean intake and filter media. Allow Smart Pump to cycle and evacuate air. Check hoses for kinks. |
| Filter Not Starting | Not plugged in, power outage, impeller obstruction, insufficient water in canister. | Ensure power connection. Check for power supply. Inspect and clean impeller. Ensure canister is filled with water before plugging in. |
| Leaking | Improperly sealed lid, worn O-rings, loose hose connections. | Ensure lid is securely latched. Inspect and lubricate/replace O-rings. Tighten hose clamps and check Aquastop valve connections. |
| Excessive Noise | Air trapped in system, impeller obstruction, filter not level. | Allow Smart Pump to evacuate air. Clean impeller. Ensure filter is on a level surface. |
