Introduction
Thank you for choosing the Weller SP40NKUS 40-Watts Soldering Iron Kit. This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use, setup, operation, and maintenance of your new soldering iron kit. Please read these instructions thoroughly before use and retain them for future reference.
Safety Information
Always observe the following safety precautions when operating the soldering iron:
- Heat Hazard: The soldering iron tip reaches very high temperatures. Avoid contact with skin or flammable materials. Always place the iron in a suitable stand when not in use.
- Fume Hazard: Soldering produces fumes. Work in a well-ventilated area or use a fume extractor. Avoid inhaling fumes directly.
- Electrical Safety: Ensure the power cord is in good condition and connected to a grounded outlet. Do not use the iron if the cord is damaged. Keep the iron away from water or damp conditions.
- Eye Protection: Always wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from splashes of molten solder or flux.
- Children and Pets: Keep the soldering iron and all related materials out of reach of children and pets.
- Proper Use: Use the soldering iron only for its intended purpose. Do not modify the tool.
Kit Contents
Your Weller SP40NKUS kit includes the following items:
- Weller SP40NKUS 40-Watts Soldering Iron
- 2 Spare Soldering Tips (various types)
- Solder Wire
- Solder Aid Tool

This image displays all components of the Weller SP40NKUS 40-Watts Soldering Iron Kit, including the red and black soldering iron, two different spare soldering tips, a coil of solder wire, and a solder aid tool.
Setup
- Unpack: Carefully remove all components from the packaging.
- Tip Selection: Choose the appropriate soldering tip for your task. Ensure the tip is securely fastened to the heating element. The kit includes various tips for different applications.
- Placement: Place the soldering iron in a stable, heat-resistant stand (not included, but highly recommended) on a non-flammable surface.
- Power Connection: Plug the soldering iron into a standard grounded electrical outlet.
- Pre-heating: Allow the iron to heat up for approximately 2-5 minutes until it reaches its operating temperature. The integrated LEDs will illuminate, providing superior accuracy and application illumination during use.
Operating Instructions
Follow these steps for effective soldering:
- Prepare the Tip (Tinning): Once heated, apply a small amount of solder to the tip. This process, known as 'tinning', helps protect the tip from oxidation and improves heat transfer.
- Clean Surfaces: Ensure the components and PCB pads you intend to solder are clean and free of dirt or grease.
- Positioning: Hold the soldering iron by its co-molded and ribbed grip for maximum comfort and reduced slippage. The triangular handle design aids in tip positioning and precise control.
- Heat the Joint: Place the hot soldering iron tip against both the component lead and the PCB pad simultaneously. Hold it there for a few seconds to allow both surfaces to heat up.
- Apply Solder: Once the joint is hot enough, touch the solder wire to the heated joint (not directly to the iron tip). The solder should melt and flow smoothly around the joint, forming a shiny, cone-shaped connection.
- Remove Solder and Iron: Remove the solder wire first, then immediately remove the soldering iron. Avoid moving the component until the solder has solidified (a few seconds).
- Inspect Joint: A good solder joint will be shiny and smooth. A dull or lumpy joint may indicate a 'cold joint' and should be reheated and re-soldered.
Maintenance
Proper maintenance extends the life of your soldering iron:
- Tip Cleaning: Regularly wipe the hot soldering tip on a damp sponge or brass wool cleaner to remove excess solder and oxidation. Re-tin the tip after cleaning.
- Tip Replacement: If a tip becomes pitted, corroded, or no longer accepts solder, it should be replaced. The Weller SP40NKUS features easy tip change functionality. Ensure the iron is cool before changing tips.
- General Cleaning: Keep the handle and cord clean and free of debris. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: When not in use, allow the iron to cool completely before storing it in a dry, safe place.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Iron not heating up | Not plugged in; faulty outlet; internal fault | Check power connection; try a different outlet; if problem persists, discontinue use and contact support. |
| Solder not melting or flowing well | Tip not tinned; tip oxidized; insufficient heat transfer; wrong solder type | Clean and re-tin tip; replace tip if severely oxidized; ensure proper contact with joint; use appropriate solder. |
| Dull or lumpy solder joints | Cold joint; insufficient heat; movement during cooling | Reheat and re-solder the joint, ensuring adequate heat and no movement until solidified. |
