Palmer PPB10

Palmer PPB10 10-Channel Audio Interface

Instruction Manual

Introduction

The Palmer PPB10 is a compact 10-channel audio splitter designed for press conferences and various other audio distribution applications. It functions by taking a single line input and splitting it into ten independent outputs, utilizing a transformer-isolated design for optimal signal integrity.

Setup

Follow these steps to set up your Palmer PPB10 audio interface:

  1. Power Connection: Connect the supplied power cable to the POWER input on the rear panel of the PPB10 and then to a suitable AC power outlet. Ensure the power switch is in the OFF position before connecting.
  2. Line Input: Connect your audio source (e.g., mixer output) to the LINE IN XLR input on the rear panel. Alternatively, you can use the 1/4-inch TRS or RCA inputs for the BUS input, which can be routed to the LINE IN.
  3. Audio Outputs: Connect your receiving devices (e.g., recording devices, cameras) to the ten individual XLR outputs (OUT 1 to OUT 10) on the front panel.
  4. Ground Lift: For each output, individual ground lift switches are provided on the rear panel. Engage these switches if you experience hum or ground loop noise in specific output channels.
  5. Power On: Once all connections are secure, switch the POWER button on the rear panel to the ON position. The power indicator on the front panel will illuminate.

Operating

The Palmer PPB10 is designed for straightforward operation:

  • Input Gain Adjustment: Use the GAIN knob on the front panel to adjust the input level. Monitor the LEVEL indicator to ensure the signal is not clipping (distorting). Adjust the gain until the signal is strong but does not consistently peak into the red.
  • Headphone Monitoring: The PPB10 includes a headphone output with an adjustable volume control (PHONES) on the front panel. This allows you to monitor the incoming audio signal directly.
  • Output Distribution: The unit automatically splits the single input signal to all ten XLR outputs. Each output provides an isolated signal, suitable for feeding various recording or broadcast devices.
  • Ground Lift Switches: If any connected device experiences hum or noise, activate the corresponding ground lift switch on the rear panel for that specific output channel. This can help eliminate ground loops.

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your Palmer PPB10:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. Avoid using liquid cleaners, solvents, or abrasive materials, as these can damage the finish or internal components.
  • Environment: Operate and store the device in a dry environment, away from extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, and excessive dust.
  • Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation around the unit to prevent overheating. Do not block any ventilation openings.
  • Cable Care: Regularly inspect all cables for damage. Replace any frayed or damaged cables to prevent signal issues or potential hazards.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your PPB10, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • No Audio Output:
    • Check if the unit is powered on and the power indicator is lit.
    • Verify that the audio source is connected correctly to the LINE IN and is sending a signal.
    • Ensure the GAIN knob is adjusted appropriately and not set to minimum.
    • Check all output cables and connections to the receiving devices.
  • Hum or Buzzing Noise:
    • Activate the individual GROUND LIFT switches on the rear panel for the affected output channels.
    • Ensure all audio cables are in good condition and properly shielded.
    • Try connecting the PPB10 and connected equipment to the same power outlet or a power conditioner to minimize ground loops.
  • Distorted Audio:
    • Reduce the input GAIN using the knob on the front panel. The LEVEL indicator should not consistently show red.
    • Check the output level of your audio source; it might be too high.
    • Ensure the receiving devices are not being overdriven.
