Safety Information

Observe the following safety precautions during installation and operation:

  • Static Electricity: Always discharge static electricity by using an anti-static wrist strap or grounding yourself before handling the component. Static discharge can damage devices and cause injury.
  • Sharp Edges: Be cautious when handling the device, as some edges or components may be sharp. Exercise care to avoid cuts or abrasions.
  • Power Off Before Handling: Ensure the host device is powered off and unplugged before installing or removing the network adapter. Working with powered systems may lead to electric shocks or damage to components.

Package Contents

Verify that your package contains the following items:

  • 1 x 1 Port PCI Express PCIe Gigabit Network Server Adapter NIC Card
  • 1 x Low Profile Bracket
  • 1 x Driver CD
  • 1 x Instruction Manual (this document)

Setup

Physical Installation

Follow these steps to install the network adapter into your computer:

  1. Power off your computer and disconnect the power cable from the power supply.
  2. Open the computer case.
  3. Locate an available PCI Express (PCIe) slot on your motherboard. The ST1000SPEX2 uses a PCIe x1 interface, compatible with x1, x4, x8, or x16 slots.
  4. Remove the metal bracket cover from the chosen PCIe slot on the computer case.
  5. If your computer case requires a low-profile bracket, remove the full-profile bracket from the network adapter and attach the included low-profile bracket.
  6. Carefully insert the network adapter into the PCIe slot, ensuring it is fully seated. Secure the adapter with a screw or retention clip, depending on your case design.
  7. Close the computer case and reconnect the power cable.
  8. Power on your computer.

Driver Installation

Most modern operating systems, such as Windows 10 and Windows 11, will automatically detect and install the necessary drivers for the ST1000SPEX2 network adapter upon startup. If drivers are not automatically installed, or if you are using an older operating system (e.g., Windows 7, Windows Server 2012/2016/2019, Linux, Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9), you can install them from the included driver CD or download the latest drivers from the StarTech.com website.

Operating

Connecting to a Network

Once the network adapter is physically installed and drivers are loaded, connect a standard RJ45 Ethernet cable from your network router, switch, or modem to the RJ45 port on the ST1000SPEX2 adapter. The adapter supports 10/100/1000 Mbps connections and will automatically negotiate the highest possible speed with your network device.

LED Indicators

The ST1000SPEX2 features two LED indicators on the bracket:

  • 1000M (Gigabit Link/Activity): This LED indicates a Gigabit (1000 Mbps) connection. It will be lit when a Gigabit link is established and may flash to indicate network activity.
  • LINK/ACT (Link/Activity): This LED indicates a network link (10/100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps). It will be lit when a network link is established and will flash to indicate network activity.

Advanced Features

The network adapter supports several advanced features:

  • Jumbo Frame Support: Supports 9K Jumbo Frames, which can improve network efficiency for large data transfers.
  • VLAN Tagging (IEEE 802.1Q): Allows for network segmentation and traffic management.
  • Wake on LAN (WOL): Enables the computer to be remotely woken up from a low-power state.
  • IEEE 802.1P Layer 2 Priority Encoding: Provides Quality of Service (QoS) for network traffic.
  • IEEE 802.3x Full Duplex Flow Control: Manages data flow to prevent packet loss in full-duplex mode.

Maintenance

The StarTech.com ST1000SPEX2 network adapter requires minimal maintenance. Ensure the computer's internal environment is clean and free of dust to prevent overheating and maintain optimal performance. Periodically check for updated drivers on the StarTech.com website to ensure compatibility and access to the latest features or bug fixes.

Troubleshooting

  • No Link Light: Ensure the Ethernet cable is securely connected to both the adapter and the network device. Verify that the network device (router/switch) is powered on and functioning correctly. Check the computer's Device Manager to confirm the adapter is recognized and drivers are installed.
  • Slow Network Speed: Confirm that your network infrastructure (cables, router/switch) supports Gigabit Ethernet. Check the adapter's driver version and update if necessary. Ensure no other network devices are causing congestion.
  • Adapter Not Detected: Ensure the adapter is fully seated in the PCIe slot. Try a different PCIe slot if available. Verify that the computer's BIOS/UEFI settings allow for PCIe device detection. Reinstall drivers if necessary.
  • Driver Installation Issues: If automatic driver installation fails, use the provided driver CD or download the latest drivers directly from the StarTech.com support website for your specific operating system.
