1. Introduction
Thank you for choosing the Rowenta DW9220 Steam Iron. This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient use of your appliance. Please read all instructions carefully before first use and retain them for future reference. This steam iron is designed to provide powerful steam and precise ironing for various fabric types, ensuring excellent results.
2. Important Safety Instructions
When using your iron, basic safety precautions should always be followed:
- Read all instructions before use.
- Use the iron only for its intended use.
- To avoid the risk of electric shock, do not immerse the iron in water or other liquids.
- Always turn the iron to OFF before plugging or unplugging from the electrical outlet. Never yank cord to disconnect from outlet; instead, grasp plug and pull to disconnect.
- Do not allow cord to touch hot surfaces. Let iron cool completely before putting away. Loop cord loosely around iron when storing.
- Always disconnect iron from electrical outlet when filling with water or emptying, and when not in use.
- Do not operate iron with a damaged cord or if the iron has been dropped or damaged. To avoid the risk of electric shock, do not disassemble the iron; take it to a qualified serviceman for examination and repair. Incorrect reassembly can cause a risk of electric shock when the iron is used.
- Close supervision is necessary for any appliance being used by or near children. Do not leave iron unattended while connected or on an ironing board.
- Burns can occur from touching hot metal parts, hot water, or steam. Use caution when you turn a steam iron upside down – there may be hot water in the reservoir.
- The iron must be used and rested on a stable surface.
- When placing the iron on its stand, ensure that the surface on which the stand is placed is stable.

4. Setup
4.1 Before First Use
- Remove any labels or protective covers from the soleplate.
- It is normal for a small amount of smoke or odor to be produced during the first few minutes of use. This will disappear after a short time.
- For optimal performance, fill the water tank and use the steam function on an old cloth for a few minutes to prime the system.
4.2 Filling the Water Tank
- Ensure the iron is unplugged from the electrical outlet.
- Hold the iron in a vertical position.
- Open the water tank filling inlet.
- Fill the water tank with clean tap water up to the 'MAX' level indicator (320 ml capacity). Do not overfill.
- Close the water tank filling inlet securely.
Note: The Rowenta DW9220 is designed to use regular tap water. However, if your water is very hard, it is recommended to use a mixture of 50% tap water and 50% distilled water to prolong the life of your iron.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Temperature Settings
- Plug the iron into a suitable electrical outlet.
- Turn the temperature control dial to the desired setting based on the fabric type. Refer to the garment's care label for recommendations.
- Wait for the indicator light to turn off, indicating that the iron has reached the selected temperature.
Tip: Always start with fabrics that require lower temperatures and gradually increase for higher temperature fabrics.
5.2 Steam Functions
The Rowenta DW9220 offers powerful steam capabilities:
- Continuous Steam: Ensure the temperature dial is set to a steam-compatible setting (usually indicated by steam symbols on the dial). The iron will automatically produce continuous steam. The variable steam output is up to 50 g/min.
- Shot of Steam (Steam Boost): For stubborn creases, press the steam trigger button. This delivers an extra burst of steam (up to 200 g/min). Wait a few seconds between shots to allow the iron to reheat.
- Vertical Steaming: The shot of steam function can also be used for vertical steaming of hanging garments, curtains, or drapes. Hold the iron vertically a few inches away from the fabric and press the steam trigger.

5.3 Spray Function
Press the spray button to emit a fine mist of water onto the fabric. This is useful for dampening dry areas or stubborn creases before ironing.
5.4 Anti-Drip System
The iron is equipped with an anti-drip system that prevents water from dripping onto your garments, especially at lower temperatures. If you hear a click, it is the anti-drip system operating.

6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning the Soleplate
- After each use, allow the iron to cool completely.
- Wipe the soleplate with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or metallic scouring pads, as these can damage the soleplate.
- If synthetic fibers have melted onto the soleplate, set the iron to maximum temperature and iron over an old cotton cloth.
6.2 Descaling (Self-Clean Function)
Regular descaling helps maintain optimal steam performance and prolongs the life of your iron. Perform this function once a month, or more frequently if you live in a hard water area.
- Fill the water tank to the 'MAX' level.
- Plug in the iron and set the temperature dial to maximum.
- Once the indicator light turns off, unplug the iron.
- Hold the iron horizontally over a sink.
- Press and hold the self-clean button (if available, or refer to specific model instructions for self-clean). Hot water and steam will be expelled from the soleplate, carrying away mineral deposits.
- Gently shake the iron back and forth until the water tank is empty.
- Plug the iron back in and let it heat up to dry the soleplate.
- Unplug and allow to cool before storing.
6.3 Storage
Always unplug the iron and allow it to cool completely before storing. Empty any remaining water from the tank. Store the iron upright on its heel rest to protect the soleplate.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your iron, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No steam produced. | Water tank is empty; temperature setting is too low; iron not hot enough. | Fill water tank; set temperature to a steam-compatible setting; wait for indicator light to turn off. |
| Water drips from soleplate. | Temperature is too low for steam; water tank overfilled. | Increase temperature setting; do not overfill water tank. The anti-drip system should minimize this. |
| Iron does not heat up. | Not plugged in; power outlet issue; faulty iron. | Check power connection; try a different outlet; if problem persists, contact customer support. |
| White flakes coming from soleplate. | Mineral deposits (limescale). | Perform the self-clean function. Use a mixture of tap and distilled water if your tap water is very hard. |
If the problem persists after trying these solutions, please contact Rowenta customer support.
