Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and effective use of your Sony DSC-W710 digital camera. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the camera and retain it for future reference.

1. Setup

1.1 Unboxing and Package Contents

Carefully unpack your camera and verify that all components are present. The package should contain:

  • Sony DSC-W710 Digital Camera
  • Rechargeable Battery Pack
  • AC Adaptor
  • USB Cable
  • Wrist Strap
  • Instruction Manual (this document)

1.2 Charging the Battery

Before initial use, fully charge the supplied battery pack. Connect the camera to the AC Adaptor using the USB cable, then plug the AC Adaptor into a wall outlet. The charge lamp will illuminate during charging and turn off when charging is complete.

1.3 Inserting the Battery and Memory Card

Open the battery/memory card cover on the bottom of the camera. Insert the charged battery pack firmly until it clicks into place. Insert a compatible memory card (SD/SDHC/SDXC or Memory Stick Duo/Pro Duo/Pro-HG Duo) with the notched corner facing the correct direction until it clicks. Close the cover securely.

Note: The camera supports memory cards up to 8GB for optimal performance, as larger cards may not be recognized by some older firmware versions.

1.4 Initial Settings (Date/Time)

Upon first power-on or after the battery has been removed for an extended period, the camera will prompt you to set the date and time. Use the control buttons to navigate and set the correct date, time, and time zone. Confirm your selections to proceed.

2. Operation

2.1 Powering On/Off

To power on the camera, press the POWER button located on the top panel. To power off, press the POWER button again.

2.2 Basic Photography (Intelligent Auto Mode)

For most situations, the Intelligent Auto mode provides optimal settings. To take a picture:

  1. Turn on the camera.
  2. Point the camera at your subject.
  3. Press the shutter button halfway down to focus. The focus frame will turn green when focus is achieved.
  4. Press the shutter button fully down to capture the image.

2.3 Zooming

Use the zoom lever located around the shutter button to adjust the optical zoom (5x). Push the lever towards 'W' for wide-angle and 'T' for telephoto. The camera also features a digital zoom (up to 20x) which can be enabled in the menu, though it may reduce image quality.

2.4 Flash Modes

Press the flash button (usually marked with a lightning bolt icon) on the control panel to cycle through available flash modes:

  • Auto Flash: The camera automatically determines if flash is needed.
  • Fill-Flash: Flash fires for every shot.
  • Slow Sync: Flash fires, and shutter speed is slowed to capture background light.
  • Flash Off: Flash does not fire.

2.5 Shooting Modes

The camera offers various shooting modes accessible via the MENU button. Key modes include:

  • Intelligent Auto: Automatic scene recognition.
  • Program Auto: Allows some manual control over settings.
  • Sweep Panorama: Capture wide panoramic images by sweeping the camera horizontally or vertically.
  • Movie Mode: Records video in 720p HD. Press the dedicated movie button to start/stop recording.
  • Scene Selection: Pre-set modes for specific scenes (e.g., Portrait, Landscape, Night Scene).

2.6 Playback

Press the PLAY button to enter playback mode. Use the directional buttons to scroll through images and videos. Press the MENU button for playback options like deleting, protecting, or creating slideshows.

2.7 Transferring Images and Videos

To transfer files to a computer:

  1. Connect the camera to your computer using the supplied USB cable.
  2. Turn on the camera.
  3. Your computer should recognize the camera as a removable drive.
  4. Open the camera's folder and copy the desired files to your computer.

Alternatively, remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into a compatible card reader connected to your computer.

3. Maintenance

3.1 Cleaning the Camera

  • Camera Body: Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, use a cloth lightly dampened with water, then wipe dry. Avoid using organic solvents.
  • Lens: Use a lens brush to remove dust, then gently wipe with a lens cleaning cloth. Do not touch the lens surface with your fingers.
  • LCD Screen: Wipe gently with a soft cloth.

3.2 Battery Care

  • Always use genuine Sony battery packs.
  • Charge the battery in temperatures between 10°C and 30°C (50°F and 86°F).
  • If the battery is not used for a long period, charge it once every six months to maintain its performance.
  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place.

3.3 Storage

When storing the camera for extended periods, remove the battery and memory card. Store the camera in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, high temperatures, humidity, and dust. Use a desiccant if storing in humid environments.

4. Troubleshooting

ProblemSolution
Camera does not turn on.Ensure the battery is fully charged and correctly inserted. Try charging the battery again.
Images are blurry.Check if the lens is clean. Ensure the camera is focused by pressing the shutter button halfway before fully pressing. Use a higher shutter speed or flash in low light.
"Memory Card Error" message appears.Reinsert the memory card. Try a different, compatible memory card. Ensure the card is not locked (write-protected). Format the card (this will erase all data).
Flash does not fire.Check the flash mode setting; ensure it is not set to "Flash Off". The flash may not fire if the battery is low.
Cannot transfer images to computer.Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the camera and computer. Verify the camera is powered on. Try a different USB port or cable.
