Scosche BLESCAD

Scosche BLESCAD Bluetooth Smart Speed & Cadence Sensor User Manual

Model: BLESCAD

1. Introduction

The Scosche BLESCAD Bluetooth Smart Speed and Cadence Sensor is designed to accurately track and transmit essential cycling statistics wirelessly to compatible devices. This lightweight sensor provides real-time data for speed, cadence, and distance, enhancing your cycling experience and fitness tracking.

2. Package Contents

Please verify that all items are present in your package:

  • Scosche BLESCAD Speed & Cadence Sensor
  • Wheel magnet
  • Crank arm magnet
  • Zip ties for mounting
  • User Manual (this document)

3. Product Overview

The BLESCAD sensor combines both speed and cadence tracking into a single unit. It utilizes Bluetooth 4.0 (Bluetooth Smart/BLE) technology for low-power wireless communication with your smartphone, tablet, or cycling computer. The sensor detects wheel rotations for speed and crank arm rotations for cadence using magnetic impulses.

4. Setup

4.1. Installation

  1. Mount the Sensor: Attach the sensor to the chainstay of your bicycle using the provided zip ties. Position the sensor so that its two detection arms are aligned with the wheel spokes and the crank arm. Ensure the sensor is securely fastened and does not interfere with pedaling or wheel rotation.
  2. Install the Wheel Magnet: Secure the wheel magnet to a spoke on your rear wheel. Position it so that it passes within 1-2 mm of the speed detection arm of the sensor with each wheel rotation.
  3. Install the Crank Arm Magnet: Attach the crank arm magnet to the inside of your non-drive side crank arm. Position it so that it passes within 1-2 mm of the cadence detection arm of the sensor with each pedal rotation.

Important: Proper magnet alignment and close proximity (1-2 mm) to the sensor are crucial for accurate readings. Adjust the sensor and magnets as needed to achieve this distance.

4.2. Pairing with a Device

The BLESCAD sensor uses Bluetooth 4.0 (Bluetooth Smart) for connectivity. Ensure your smartphone, tablet, or cycling computer supports Bluetooth 4.0 or newer.

  1. Activate the Sensor: To wake the sensor from sleep mode and enable pairing, rotate your bicycle's wheel or crank arm so that the respective magnets pass by the sensor. The sensor will activate and begin broadcasting its signal.
  2. Open Your Fitness App: On your compatible device, open your preferred fitness application (e.g., Wahoo Fitness, Strava, Zwift, or other Bluetooth Smart compatible apps).
  3. Search for Sensors: Navigate to the sensor pairing or device connection section within your app. Select "Add New Sensor" or a similar option.
  4. Select the BLESCAD Sensor: Your device should detect the "Scosche BLESCAD" or a similar name. Select it to complete the pairing process.
  5. Confirm Connection: Once paired, the app should display real-time speed and cadence data as you rotate the wheel and crank arm.

Note: The sensor will remain active for a period after motion stops before entering sleep mode to conserve battery.

5. Operating the Sensor

Once installed and paired, the Scosche BLESCAD sensor operates automatically. As you cycle, it will transmit speed and cadence data to your connected device. Most fitness applications will record this data, allowing you to track your performance, distance, and training metrics.

  • Speed Tracking: The sensor measures your speed based on the rotations of your rear wheel. Ensure your app has the correct wheel circumference set for accurate distance and speed calculations.
  • Cadence Tracking: The sensor measures your pedaling rate (revolutions per minute) based on the rotations of your crank arm.
  • Real-time Data: View your speed and cadence in real-time on your connected device's display.

6. Maintenance

6.1. Battery Replacement

The sensor is powered by a CR2032 coin cell battery. When the battery is low, your connected app may indicate a weak signal or the sensor may stop transmitting data. To replace the battery:

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the sensor.
  2. Carefully open the cover (usually by twisting or prying with a small coin).
  3. Remove the old CR2032 battery.
  4. Insert a new CR2032 battery with the positive (+) side facing up.
  5. Securely close the battery compartment cover, ensuring the rubber seal is properly seated for water resistance.

Note: It is recommended to replace the battery with a fresh, high-quality CR2032 battery for optimal performance.

6.2. Cleaning and Care

To ensure the longevity and performance of your sensor:

  • Wipe the sensor clean with a damp cloth as needed. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Periodically check the mounting zip ties for tightness and ensure the magnets remain properly aligned.
  • The sensor has an IP54 rating, meaning it is protected from dust and splashing water. While it can withstand rain, avoid submerging it in water.

7. Troubleshooting

  • Sensor Not Pairing:
    • Ensure your device supports Bluetooth 4.0 (Bluetooth Smart).
    • Activate the sensor by rotating the wheel or crank arm to wake it up.
    • Check the battery. Replace if necessary.
    • Move closer to the sensor with your device.
    • Try restarting your device's Bluetooth or the device itself.
  • Inaccurate or Intermittent Readings:
    • Verify that the wheel and crank arm magnets are positioned within 1-2 mm of their respective sensor detection arms.
    • Ensure the magnets are strong enough. Some third-party magnets may be required if the included ones are insufficient.
    • Check for any obstructions or interference between the sensor and magnets.
    • Confirm the battery is not low.
    • For speed, ensure the correct wheel circumference is set in your fitness app.
  • Sensor Not Detected by App:
    • Make sure the sensor is active (wake it up by spinning the wheel/crank).
    • Close and reopen your fitness app.
    • Check if the sensor is already paired with another device. Bluetooth Smart sensors typically only connect to one device at a time.
