Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when installing or operating the winch. Failure to follow safety guidelines can result in serious injury or property damage.

  • Read and understand all instructions before operation.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and eye protection.
  • Ensure the winch is securely mounted to a suitable ATV-specific winch mount.
  • Do not exceed the winch's rated pulling capacity.
  • Keep hands and clothing clear of the wire rope, fairlead, and hook during operation.
  • Never operate the winch with frayed or damaged wire rope.
  • Disconnect power before performing any maintenance or adjustments.

Setup and Installation

The KFI A2500-R2 winch comes with all necessary components for installation, except for an ATV model-specific winch mount, which must be purchased separately.

Components Overview

  • KFI A2500-R2 ATV Series Winch unit

    Winch Unit

The main winch assembly, featuring a 1.1 hp motor, 171:1 gear ratio, and 45.9 feet of 3/16-inch diameter aircraft-grade wire rope. It has a standard 4-hole mounting design.

  • Winch Solenoid/Contactor

    Solenoid/Contactor

An electrical relay that controls the power flow to the winch motor, allowing for safe and efficient operation. Ensure proper wiring as per the included diagram.

  • Handlebar Mini-Rocker Switch

    Mini-Rocker Handlebar Switch

Allows for convenient control of the winch (in/out) directly from the ATV handlebars. This switch is designed for easy access during operation.

  • Wiring Harness

Includes all necessary cables and connectors for electrical hookup between the winch, solenoid, switch, and ATV battery.

Installation Steps

  1. Mount the ATV-specific winch mount to your ATV frame according to the mount manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Attach the KFI A2500-R2 winch unit to the winch mount using the provided hardware. Ensure all bolts are tightened securely.
  3. Install the solenoid/contactor in a dry, protected location, typically near the battery or under the seat.
  4. Route the wiring harness from the winch to the solenoid, and from the solenoid to the ATV battery and the handlebar switch. Ensure wires are secured and away from moving parts or heat sources.
  5. Connect the wires to the solenoid and battery following the wiring diagram provided with your winch. Pay close attention to positive and negative terminals.
  6. Mount the mini-rocker handlebar switch in a convenient location on your handlebars.
  7. Perform a functional test of the winch (see Operating section) to ensure all connections are correct and the winch operates smoothly.

Operating Instructions

Before operating, ensure the ATV engine is running to provide adequate power to the winch and prevent battery drain.

Basic Winching Procedure

  1. Prepare the Area: Clear any obstacles around the ATV and the anchor point.
  2. Secure the ATV: Engage the ATV's parking brake and place the transmission in neutral. If possible, chock the wheels.
  3. Extend Wire Rope: Disengage the clutch on the winch (if applicable, refer to winch diagram) and pull out the wire rope to the desired anchor point. Always leave at least 5 wraps of wire rope on the drum.
  4. Attach Hook: Securely attach the hook to a suitable anchor point (e.g., tree saver strap, D-ring shackle on another vehicle). Do not wrap the wire rope directly around an object and hook it back onto itself.
  5. Engage Clutch: Re-engage the winch clutch.
  6. Begin Winching: Use the handlebar switch to slowly reel in the wire rope. Observe the wire rope and ensure it spools evenly onto the drum.
  7. Monitor Load: Do not overload the winch. If the motor strains or slows significantly, pause operation.
  8. Spooling: When winching is complete, carefully spool the wire rope back onto the drum under light tension to ensure even layering.

Performance Characteristics

Refer to the following tables for detailed performance specifications under various load conditions.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your KFI winch.

  • Wire Rope Inspection: Regularly inspect the wire rope for frays, kinks, or damage. Replace immediately if any damage is found.
  • Cleanliness: Keep the winch, fairlead, and wire rope clean and free of dirt, mud, and debris.
  • Electrical Connections: Periodically check all electrical connections for corrosion or looseness. Clean and tighten as necessary.
  • Lubrication: The winch is factory-lubricated. Consult KFI Products for specific lubrication requirements if needed for long-term maintenance.
  • Storage: If storing the ATV for extended periods, ensure the winch is clean and dry.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Winch does not operate. No power to winch; loose electrical connections; faulty switch or solenoid.Check battery connections and charge; inspect all wiring for looseness or corrosion; test switch and solenoid for continuity.
Winch operates slowly or weakly.Low battery voltage; overloaded winch; motor overheating.Ensure ATV engine is running; reduce load; allow motor to cool down (5 minutes cooling time recommended per performance table).
Wire rope spools unevenly.Insufficient tension during spooling; damaged fairlead.Spool wire rope under light tension; inspect fairlead for damage and replace if necessary.
Winch makes clicking sound but doesn't engage.Solenoid engaging but not passing full power; low battery voltage.Check battery voltage; inspect solenoid connections; consider solenoid replacement if issue persists.
