The ABUS 4408C/65 lock comes with a factory-set combination, typically "000". It is highly recommended to change this to a personal, memorable combination immediately after purchase.

  1. Unlock the Lock: Ensure the lock is currently set to the correct combination (factory default "000" or your last set code) and is in the unlocked position.
  2. Locate the Reset Mechanism: On the side or bottom of the lock body, there is usually a small button or screw. Refer to the diagram below for its exact location.
  3. Engage Reset Mode: Use a pen tip or a small pointed object to press and hold the reset button, or turn the reset screw 90 degrees clockwise (or as indicated by an arrow).
  4. Set New Combination: While holding the reset mechanism, rotate the number dials to your desired 3-digit combination. Choose a combination that is easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess.
  5. Disengage Reset Mode: Release the reset button or turn the reset screw back to its original position.
  6. Test New Combination: Scramble the dials, then enter your new combination and attempt to open the lock. Ensure it opens correctly. Scramble the dials again to secure the lock.

Important: Make a note of your new combination and store it in a safe place. ABUS cannot retrieve lost combinations for combination locks.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1. Locking Your Bicycle or Motorcycle

  1. Choose a Secure Object: Select a sturdy, immovable object such as a lamppost, bike rack, or railing to secure your vehicle. Ensure the object cannot be easily cut or lifted.
  2. Position the Lock: Thread the steel cable through the frame of your bicycle or a solid part of your motorcycle (e.g., wheel, frame). If possible, also include a wheel to prevent its removal.
  3. Connect the Ends: Insert the free end of the cable into the locking mechanism until it clicks securely into place.
  4. Scramble the Dials: Once locked, rotate the number dials to a random sequence to obscure your combination and prevent unauthorized opening.

4.2. Unlocking Your Bicycle or Motorcycle

  1. Enter Combination: Align the number dials to your personal 3-digit combination.
  2. Open the Lock: Once the correct combination is set, the lock mechanism should release, allowing you to pull the cable end free.
  3. Remove the Lock: Detach the cable from your vehicle and the fixed object.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and smooth operation of your ABUS 4408C/65 lock.

  • Lubrication: Periodically apply a small amount of lock lubricant (e.g., graphite-based or silicone spray) into the combination dial mechanism. This helps prevent sticking and corrosion. Avoid using oil-based lubricants as they can attract dirt.
  • Cleaning: Wipe down the steel cable and lock body with a damp cloth to remove dirt and grime. Ensure the lock is dry before storage.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the steel cable for any signs of fraying, cuts, or damage. Check the lock body for cracks or deformities. If significant damage is observed, consider replacing the lock for optimal security.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the lock in a dry environment to prevent rust and corrosion.
