Setup

1. Physical Connections

Before connecting, ensure the unit and your television are powered off.

  1. Video Connection:
    • For best quality, connect an HDMI cable (not included) from the HDMI OUT port on the recorder to an available HDMI IN port on your TV.
    • Alternatively, use the supplied AV cables (red, white, yellow) to connect the recorder's AV OUT ports to the corresponding AV IN ports on your TV.
  2. Audio Connection:
    • If using HDMI, audio will be transmitted automatically.
    • If using AV cables, the red and white cables will carry the audio.
    • For surround sound, connect an optical or coaxial digital audio cable (not included) from the recorder's digital audio output to your audio receiver.
  3. Antenna Connection: Connect your TV antenna cable to the ANT IN port on the back of the recorder. If you wish to pass the signal through to your TV, connect a coaxial cable from the ANT OUT port on the recorder to the ANT IN port on your TV.
  4. Power Connection: Connect the supplied power cable to the AC IN port on the recorder and then to a wall outlet.

2. Initial Power-On and Channel Scan

  1. Power on your TV and select the correct input source (HDMI or AV) corresponding to where you connected the recorder.
  2. Press the POWER button on the front of the recorder or on the remote control.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts for initial setup, which typically includes language selection, time zone, and an automatic channel scan. The built-in ATSC tuner will scan for available over-the-air digital channels.

Operating Instructions

Power On/Off

Press the POWER button on the unit or remote control to turn the unit on or off. When off, the unit enters standby mode.

Selecting HDD or DVD Mode

Use the HDD or DVD buttons on the front panel or remote control to switch between Hard Disc Drive and DVD operating modes.

Recording Programs

The MDR533H/F7 allows recording from the built-in ATSC tuner to the HDD, or from the HDD to a DVD.

  1. Recording from TV to HDD:
    • Ensure the unit is in HDD mode.
    • Select the desired channel using the CHANNEL +/- buttons.
    • Press the RECORD button to start recording. Press again to stop.
    • For timed recordings, access the timer recording menu via the remote control and set the start time, end time, channel, and frequency (one-time, daily, weekly).
  2. Recording from HDD to DVD:
    • Insert a blank recordable DVD (DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW) into the DVD drive.
    • Navigate to the HDD content you wish to transfer.
    • Follow the on-screen menu options to initiate the transfer process. This typically involves selecting the title(s) and confirming the transfer to DVD.

Playback

  1. Playing HDD Content:
    • Ensure the unit is in HDD mode.
    • Access the HDD menu to view recorded titles.
    • Select the desired title and press PLAY.
  2. Playing DVDs:
    • Insert a DVD into the DVD drive.
    • Ensure the unit is in DVD mode.
    • The DVD should begin playback automatically or present a menu. Use the remote control to navigate.

HDD Management

The 320GB HDD allows for significant storage of recorded programs. Regularly review and delete unwanted recordings to free up space. The HDD menu provides options for viewing, editing (e.g., dividing titles), and deleting recorded content.

1080P Up-Conversion

The unit can up-convert standard definition content to 1080P resolution when connected via HDMI, providing an improved viewing experience on compatible high-definition televisions.
