1. Product Overview
The Gallagher Smart Fence 2 is a self-contained, portable electric fencing system designed for efficient livestock containment. It offers a quick and easy solution for temporary fencing needs across various terrains.
Key Features:
- Complete Portable Electric Fencing Solution: Includes four horizontal strands of polywire, 10 pre-installed posts, and a total length of up to 328 feet. It's a plug-and-play solution for spring pastures, rotational grazing, or emergency repairs. The top wire height is 42" (including the tread-in spike), or 35.5" from ground level. Note: Fence Charger and Grounding Rod are Not Included.
- Versatile and Safe Livestock Containment: Suitable for cattle, sheep, goats, and other animals trained to electric fencing. The four-wire system minimizes risk and maximizes control, ideal for spring grazing rotations, temporary pastures, blocking off damaged fencing, protecting hay bales, or setting up portable pens. Functions effectively on any terrain, flat or contoured.
- Lightweight and Easy to Transport: Weighs just 16 lbs, making it compact, portable, and quick to deploy. Can be installed, taken down, and moved in minutes, saving time for temporary corrals, roadside grazing zones, or quick rotational pasture boundaries. Simply place the end post in the ground, and four wires unreel simultaneously as you install each remaining post.
- Durable Construction: Engineered with weather-resistant materials for repeated use in changing outdoor conditions. Built to perform year-round for rotational grazing, dividing paddocks, or short-term fencing needs.

- Keep children and untrained individuals away from the electric fence.
- Regularly inspect the fence for damage or shorts that could reduce its effectiveness.
- Ensure proper grounding for the energizer (not included) to function correctly.
- Consult local regulations regarding electric fence installation and usage.
3. Setup and Installation
The Gallagher Smart Fence 2 is designed for quick and easy deployment. Follow these steps for optimal setup:
- Prepare the Area: Clear any tall grass or debris along the intended fence line to prevent shorts and ensure maximum shock delivery.
- Position the First Post: Place the first post firmly into the ground at your starting point. This post acts as an anchor.
- Unreel the Fence: Hold the Smart Fence 2 unit and walk along your desired fence line. The four polywires will unreel simultaneously as you move.
- Install Subsequent Posts: As you walk, firmly push each integrated post into the ground using the foot treadle. Ensure posts are spaced evenly and the wires remain taut.
- Secure the End Post: Once the desired length is reached, secure the final post firmly into the ground. You may use an existing permanent fence or an additional sturdy post for extra stability at the ends.
- Connect to Energizer: Connect a suitable electric fence energizer (not included) and a grounding rod (not included) to the Smart Fence 2 system according to the energizer's instructions. Ensure all connections are secure and the energizer is switched on.

- Clean Components: Clean the reel and posts as necessary to remove dirt and debris, especially before storage.
- Store Properly: When not in use, reel in the fence completely and store the unit in a dry, protected area to prevent weather damage.
6. Troubleshooting
If your Smart Fence 2 is not performing as expected, consider the following common issues and solutions:
- No Shock or Weak Shock:
- Check energizer connection and ensure it is powered on.
- Verify proper grounding of the energizer.
- Inspect the fence line for vegetation touching the wires, causing a short.
- Look for any broken wires or loose connections.
- Fence Sagging:
- Ensure all posts are firmly planted.
- Tighten the polywires using the reel mechanism.
- Add additional temporary posts if the span between existing posts is too long for the terrain.
- Animals Breaching Fence:
- Confirm the fence is electrified and delivering a sufficient shock.
- Ensure animals are properly trained to electric fencing.
- Check wire heights are appropriate for the type and size of livestock.
