Key Features:

  • Operated by a cichlid key for secure locking and unlocking.
  • Standard 72 mm distance between the nut and cichlid holes.
  • Designed for universal use with both DIN-right and DIN-left doors.
  • Features a 20mm rounded gauntlet and a 55mm backset.
  • Latch and trap components are constructed from durable plastic.
  • When the door is closed, only the latch is activated; the latch is fully engaged upon locking with the door cylinder.

Setup and Installation

Before beginning installation, ensure you have the necessary tools: screwdriver, measuring tape, pencil, and possibly a chisel or drill depending on your door type.

1. Prepare the Door:

  1. Measure and mark the position for the mortise lock on the door edge. Refer to Image 2 for precise dimensions.
  2. Carefully chisel out the mortise pocket in the door edge to accommodate the lock body. Ensure the depth and width match the lock's dimensions (235 mm length, 80 mm width, 20 mm height).
  3. Drill holes for the spindle (handle) and the keyhole, ensuring they align with the lock's mechanism. The distance between the nut (spindle) and cichlid (key) holes is 72 mm.

2. Install the Lock Body:

  1. Insert the ABUS ES Universal S Mortise Lock into the prepared mortise pocket. Ensure it sits flush with the door edge.
  2. Secure the lock body with appropriate screws through the pre-drilled holes on the faceplate (gauntlet).

3. Install Door Furniture:

  1. Insert the door spindle through the square hole in the lock mechanism.
  2. Attach the door handles (not included) to the spindle on both sides of the door.
  3. Install the key escutcheons (not included) around the keyhole on both sides.

4. Install the Strike Plate:

  1. Close the door gently to mark the position of the latch and deadbolt on the door frame.
  2. Chisel out recesses in the door frame for the latch and deadbolt to engage smoothly.
  3. Attach the strike plate (not included) to the door frame, ensuring it aligns perfectly with the lock's latch and deadbolt. Secure with screws.

Note: The lock is designed for universal use (DIN-right or DIN-left doors). No specific re-handing is required for the lock mechanism itself.

Operating Instructions

Locking and Unlocking:

  • To Close the Door: Simply push the door shut. The latch will retract and engage with the strike plate, holding the door closed.
  • To Open the Door: Depress the door handle. This retracts the latch, allowing the door to open.
  • To Lock the Door: Insert the provided cichlid key into the keyhole. Turn the key to extend the deadbolt into the strike plate. The deadbolt provides additional security.
  • To Unlock the Door: Insert the cichlid key into the keyhole. Turn the key in the opposite direction to retract the deadbolt. The door can then be opened by depressing the handle.

Important: The latch is activated by locking the door cylinder. Ensure the key is fully inserted and turned for proper engagement of the deadbolt.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and smooth operation of your ABUS mortise lock.

  • Cleaning: Wipe the visible parts of the lock (faceplate, keyhole) with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the finish.
  • Lubrication: Periodically (e.g., once a year), apply a small amount of graphite powder or a silicone-based lubricant specifically designed for locks into the keyhole and around the latch and deadbolt mechanisms. Do not use oil-based lubricants as they can attract dust and grime.
  • Inspection: Regularly check all screws for tightness. Ensure the latch and deadbolt move freely without obstruction. If you notice any stiffness or unusual sounds, apply lubricant.
  • Key Care: Keep the cichlid key clean and free of debris. Do not force the key if it feels stiff; apply lubricant to the lock mechanism.
