Setup: Setting Your Combination
Your ABUS 145/40 padlock comes with a factory preset combination, usually 0-0-0-0. Follow these steps to set your personalized 4-digit combination:
- Open the Padlock: Align the dials to the factory preset combination (0-0-0-0) and pull up the shackle to open the lock.
- Rotate the Shackle: With the shackle open, rotate it 90 degrees (or 180 degrees, depending on the model) until it aligns with the notch on the lock body.
- Press Down the Shackle: While holding the shackle pressed down into the lock body, set your desired 4-digit combination by rotating the dials. Ensure the numbers are clearly aligned with the indicator line.
- Return the Shackle: Release the shackle and rotate it back to its original closed position. Your new combination is now set.
- Test the Combination: Scramble the dials and then enter your new combination to ensure it opens correctly.

Operating the Padlock
To use your ABUS 145/40 padlock:
- To Unlock: Rotate the dials to your set 4-digit combination. The shackle will release, allowing you to open the lock.
- To Lock: Close the shackle firmly into the lock body. Once closed, scramble the dials to a random set of numbers. This secures the lock and prevents unauthorized opening.

Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and smooth operation of your ABUS 145/40 padlock:
- Keep Clean: Periodically wipe the padlock body and dials with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and grime.
- Lubrication: If the dials become stiff or difficult to turn, apply a small amount of graphite powder or a silicone-based lubricant to the moving parts. Avoid oil-based lubricants as they can attract dirt.
- Storage: Store the padlock in a dry environment when not in use to prevent corrosion.
Troubleshooting
- Dials are Stiff: If the dials are hard to turn, apply a small amount of graphite powder or silicone spray lubricant to the dials and work them back and forth.
- Padlock Will Not Open:
- Ensure the correct combination is entered and the numbers are perfectly aligned with the indicator line.
- If the combination has been forgotten, this non-TSA padlock cannot be reset without the correct code. In such cases, the lock may need to be cut.
- Shackle Does Not Close: Ensure the dials are scrambled after attempting to close the shackle. If the shackle is still open, try re-entering the correct combination, opening it, and then closing it firmly before scrambling.
