Electro-Voice OLM-10 Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone User Manual

Model: OLM10 | Brand: Electro-Voice

1. Introduction

Thank you for choosing the Electro-Voice OLM-10 Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone. This high-quality condenser microphone is designed for professional audio capture, particularly suited for use with Electro-Voice wireless systems such as the R100, RE-2, and RE-1, as well as compatible Telex wireless units. Its omnidirectional polar pattern ensures consistent sound pickup from all directions, making it ideal for speech and video recording applications.

This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your OLM-10 microphone to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

3. Setup

Follow these steps to properly set up your OLM-10 lavalier microphone:

  1. Attach the Microphone Clip: Securely attach the included microphone clip to the OLM-10 microphone capsule. The clip allows for easy attachment to clothing.
  2. Attach the Windscreen: Gently slide the foam windscreen over the microphone capsule. This helps reduce plosives and wind noise, improving audio clarity.
  3. Connect to Transmitter: The OLM-10 features a TA4F (mini-XLR) connector. Plug this connector firmly into the corresponding input jack on your compatible Electro-Voice or Telex wireless bodypack transmitter. Ensure the connection clicks into place to prevent accidental disconnection.
  4. Positioning: For optimal sound quality, position the microphone approximately 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) below the user's chin, centered on the chest. Avoid placing it too close to clothing that might rub against the microphone, causing unwanted noise.
  5. Cable Management: Route the microphone cable discreetly under clothing to minimize visibility and prevent snagging. Secure any excess cable to prevent it from swinging or creating noise.

4. Operating Instructions

Once the OLM-10 is connected to your wireless transmitter, follow your transmitter's instructions for power-on and pairing with the receiver. The OLM-10 is an omnidirectional microphone, meaning it picks up sound equally from all directions. This characteristic makes it forgiving in terms of placement but also susceptible to ambient noise.

  • Gain Staging: Adjust the input gain on your wireless transmitter and/or audio mixer to achieve an optimal signal level. Aim for a strong signal without clipping (distortion). Perform a sound check before recording or live performance.
  • Monitoring: Always monitor your audio through headphones to catch any unwanted noise, distortion, or signal dropouts.
  • Environment: While omnidirectional, try to use the microphone in environments with minimal background noise for the clearest audio.

5. Maintenance and Care

Proper care will extend the life and performance of your OLM-10 microphone:

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the microphone capsule and cable. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents, as they can damage the microphone.
  • Windscreen: The foam windscreen can be gently hand-washed with mild soap and water, then air-dried completely before reattaching.
  • Storage: Store the microphone in a clean, dry place, away from extreme temperatures and humidity. Avoid tightly coiling the cable to prevent damage.
  • Handling: Avoid dropping the microphone or subjecting it to strong impacts, which can damage internal components.

6. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your OLM-10 microphone, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No Sound Output
  • Microphone not connected properly.
  • Transmitter/receiver not powered on or paired.
  • Gain set too low.
  • Faulty cable or microphone.
  • Ensure TA4F connector is fully seated.
  • Check power and pairing status of wireless system.
  • Increase gain on transmitter/mixer.
  • Test with another known-good microphone or cable if possible.
Distorted Audio
  • Gain set too high (clipping).
  • Microphone too close to sound source.
  • Decrease input gain on transmitter/mixer.
  • Reposition microphone further from the sound source.
Excessive Background Noise
  • Omnidirectional pickup in noisy environment.
  • Microphone rubbing against clothing.
  • Use in a quieter environment or consider a directional microphone for specific applications.
  • Adjust microphone placement and cable routing to prevent rubbing.
