Bennett SLT6 Self-Leveling Tab System

User Manual

Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of your Bennett SLT6 Self-Leveling Tab System. The SLT6 system is designed to enhance boat performance by automatically adjusting trim for improved planing, reduced pounding, and increased stability. Please read these instructions thoroughly before proceeding with installation or operation.

Safety Information

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during installation, including eye protection and gloves.
  • Ensure the boat is securely supported and the engine is off before beginning any work on the transom.
  • Use marine-grade sealants and fasteners as specified to prevent water intrusion and ensure secure mounting.
  • If you are unsure about any part of the installation process, consult a qualified marine technician.

Package Contents

The Bennett SLT6 Self-Leveling Tab System typically includes:

  • Two (2) SLT6 Trim Tab Assemblies (6" x 8" tabs with integrated actuators)
  • Mounting Hardware (screws/rivets)
  • Installation Template
  • Instruction Manual

Setup and Installation

The SLT6 system is designed for transom-only mounting and does not require hydraulic pumps or complex wiring. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Determine Mounting Location: Select a flat area on the transom, ensuring sufficient clearance for the tabs to deploy and retract without obstruction. The tabs should be mounted as far outboard as possible, typically 4-6 inches from the chine.
  2. Prepare the Surface: Clean the mounting area thoroughly. Use a center punch to mark drill points accurately.
  3. Drill Pilot Holes: Using the provided template and recommended drill bit sizes, carefully drill pilot holes for the mounting screws. Apply masking tape to the drill bit to control depth.
  4. Apply Sealant: Apply a generous amount of marine-grade adhesive sealant (e.g., 3M Marine Adhesive Sealant) to all drilled holes and the back of the mounting bracket to ensure a watertight seal.
  5. Mount the Tabs: Securely fasten the trim tab assemblies to the transom using the supplied hardware. Ensure the tabs are level and properly aligned. If using rivets, ensure they are marine-grade and properly set.
  6. Inspect Installation: After mounting, visually inspect all connections for tightness and proper sealing.

This image displays a single Bennett SLT6 Self-Leveling Trim Tab unit. It consists of a black actuator assembly mounted to a stainless steel trim tab plate. The actuator is designed to automatically adjust the tab's position based on water pressure and boat speed.

Operating Instructions

The Bennett SLT6 system operates automatically, requiring no manual input from the user. Its self-leveling design reacts instantly to boat speed and water pressure.

  • At Slower Speeds: When the boat is attempting to get on plane, the actuators hold the trim tabs down. This action lifts the stern, helping the boat achieve a planing attitude more quickly and efficiently.
  • On Plane and Increasing Speed: As the boat reaches plane and its speed increases, the increased water pressure pushes the tabs upwards. This automatic adjustment maintains optimal trim for a smoother ride.

The system works to:

  • Get on plane faster.
  • Reduce hull pounding in choppy conditions.
  • Eliminate porpoising and chine walking.
  • Improve overall ride comfort and fuel efficiency.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your SLT6 system.

  • Routine Inspection: Periodically check the trim tabs and actuators for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose fasteners. Ensure the tabs move freely.
  • Cleaning: Clean the tabs and actuators with fresh water after each use, especially in saltwater environments, to prevent salt buildup and corrosion.
  • Actuator Condition: Inspect the rubber boots on the actuators for cracks or tears. Replace if damaged to prevent water intrusion.
  • Fastener Check: Verify that all mounting screws or rivets remain tight. Do not overtighten.

Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your SLT6 system, consider the following:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Tabs not moving freelyDebris, corrosion, or damaged actuatorClean tabs, inspect for obstructions, check actuator for damage.
Boat still porpoising or slow to planeIncorrect installation, damaged tab, or boat weight distribution issuesVerify installation according to instructions. Check for tab damage. Adjust boat load.
