Setup and Assembly

Before operating your Stihl MS171 chainsaw, proper assembly and preparation are crucial. This section guides you through the initial setup steps.

1. Unpacking

Carefully remove all components from the packaging. Verify that all parts are present according to the packing list. Inspect for any shipping damage.

2. Bar and Chain Installation

  1. Ensure the engine is off and the chain brake is engaged.
  2. Remove the chain sprocket cover by loosening the two nuts.
  3. Place the guide bar onto the studs, ensuring the chain tensioner pin engages with the hole in the bar.
  4. Carefully fit the saw chain around the sprocket and into the guide bar groove. Ensure the cutting edges face forward on the top of the bar.
  5. Replace the chain sprocket cover and hand-tighten the nuts. Do not fully tighten yet.

3. Fuel and Chain Oil Filling

The Stihl MS171 uses a specific fuel mixture and chain lubricant. Use Stihl 2-stroke engine oil mixed with high-octane unleaded gasoline at a 50:1 ratio (2% oil). Use only high-quality chain lubricant for the chain oil tank.

  • Fuel Tank: Fill with the correct fuel mixture.
  • Chain Oil Tank: Fill with chain lubricant.

Always fill tanks on a level surface and wipe up any spills immediately.
