Olympus OM-1
Olympus OM-1 35mm SLR Camera User Manual
Model: OM-1
Introduction
The Olympus OM-1 is a classic 35mm Single-Lens Reflex (SLR) camera, renowned for its compact size, robust mechanical design, and exceptional optical performance. This manual provides essential information for setting up, operating, and maintaining your OM-1 camera body to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
Designed for photographers who appreciate full manual control, the OM-1 offers a pure photographic experience, allowing precise adjustments of aperture, shutter speed, and focus. This camera body is compatible with Olympus OM mount lenses.
Key Components Overview

Figure 1: Top-down view of the Olympus OM-1 35mm SLR Camera Body. This image displays the camera's top plate, including the shutter speed dial, film advance lever, and rewind crank, along with the front lens mount area.
- Shutter Speed Dial: Located on the top plate, this dial controls the duration the shutter remains open. Settings typically range from 1/2000th of a second to 1 second, plus 'B' for Bulb mode.
- Film Advance Lever: Used to advance the film to the next frame after each exposure.
- Rewind Crank: Used to rewind the exposed film back into its cassette.
- Film Speed (ASA/ISO) Dial: Integrated with the shutter speed dial, this sets the film sensitivity for the light meter.
- Lens Mount: The front interface for attaching Olympus OM system lenses.
- Viewfinder: Provides a clear view of the scene and displays focusing aids and metering information.
- Hot Shoe: Located on top of the prism, for attaching external flash units.
Setup
1. Battery Installation
The Olympus OM-1 requires a 1.35V PX625 mercury battery for its light meter. Due to environmental regulations, these batteries are no longer manufactured. Suitable alternatives include 1.5V alkaline batteries (like LR44 with an adapter) or 1.35V zinc-air batteries (like WeinCell MRB625). Note that 1.5V batteries may affect meter accuracy due to voltage differences.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the bottom of the camera body.
- Use a coin to unscrew the cover counter-clockwise.
- Insert the new battery with the positive (+) side facing outwards.
- Replace the cover and screw it clockwise until secure.
2. Loading Film
The OM-1 uses standard 35mm film cartridges.
- Open the camera back by pulling up the rewind crank until it clicks open.
- Insert the 35mm film cartridge into the film chamber on the left side. Push the rewind crank down to secure the cartridge.
- Pull the film leader across to the take-up spool on the right side. Insert the tip of the film leader into one of the slots on the take-up spool.
- Advance the film once or twice using the film advance lever and press the shutter button to ensure the film is properly engaged with the take-up spool and sprockets. The rewind crank should rotate as you advance the film, indicating proper film loading.
- Close the camera back firmly until it latches.
- Advance the film two more times, pressing the shutter button after each advance, to move past the exposed film leader. The frame counter should now show '1'.
3. Setting Film Speed (ASA/ISO)
Set the ASA/ISO dial to match the speed of the film you have loaded. This ensures accurate light meter readings.
- Lift and rotate the outer ring of the shutter speed dial (the ASA/ISO dial) to align the correct film speed with the index mark.
Operating the Camera
1. Attaching a Lens
Align the red dot on the lens barrel with the red dot on the camera's lens mount. Insert the lens and rotate it clockwise until it clicks into place.
2. Setting Shutter Speed
Rotate the shutter speed dial on the top of the camera to select your desired shutter speed. Common settings include 1/125s for general use, faster speeds (e.g., 1/500s, 1/2000s) for freezing action, and slower speeds (e.g., 1/30s, 1/15s) for low light or motion blur effects. The 'B' setting keeps the shutter open as long as the button is pressed.
3. Setting Aperture
Aperture is controlled via the aperture ring on the lens (not on the camera body). Rotate the ring to select your desired f-stop. Smaller f-numbers (e.g., f/1.8, f/2.8) indicate a wider aperture, allowing more light and creating shallower depth of field. Larger f-numbers (e.g., f/16, f/22) indicate a narrower aperture, allowing less light and creating greater depth of field.
4. Focusing
Look through the viewfinder and rotate the focusing ring on the lens until your subject appears sharp. The OM-1 typically features a split-image rangefinder and microprism collar for precise manual focusing.
5. Using the Light Meter
The OM-1 features a through-the-lens (TTL) light meter. To activate the meter, turn the power switch (often near the shutter button) to 'ON'. Inside the viewfinder, a needle will indicate the correct exposure. Adjust your shutter speed and/or aperture until the needle is centered, indicating a balanced exposure.
6. Taking a Picture
Once the film is loaded, film speed set, lens attached, and exposure determined:
- Advance the film using the film advance lever until it stops.
- Compose your shot and focus.
- Adjust shutter speed and aperture for correct exposure using the light meter.
- Gently press the shutter button all the way down to take the picture.
7. Rewinding Film
After exposing all frames on the roll:
- Press the film rewind release button on the bottom of the camera body.
- Fold out the rewind crank and turn it clockwise until you feel the tension release, indicating the film has fully rewound into its cassette.
- Open the camera back and remove the film cartridge.
Maintenance
- Cleaning the Camera Body: Use a soft, lint-free cloth to wipe down the camera body. For stubborn dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water or a mild camera cleaning solution. Avoid excessive moisture, especially near dials and buttons.
- Cleaning the Lens (Front and Rear Elements): Use a lens brush or air blower to remove dust. For smudges, use a specialized lens cleaning solution and a microfiber lens cloth. Clean gently in a circular motion from the center outwards.
- Cleaning the Viewfinder: Dust on the viewfinder can be removed with an air blower. Avoid touching the internal optics. If haze or significant dust is present internally, professional cleaning may be required.
- Storage: When not in use, store the camera in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. It is advisable to remove the battery if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage. Keep the body cap on when no lens is attached to protect the internal components.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Shutter does not fire. | Film not advanced; shutter not cocked. | Advance the film advance lever fully. |
| Light meter not working. | Dead or incorrect battery; power switch off. | Check battery, replace if necessary. Ensure power switch is ON. |
| Film not advancing. | Film not properly loaded onto take-up spool; film leader detached. | Open camera back in a darkroom or changing bag, re-load film. |
| Film will not rewind. | Rewind release button not pressed. | Ensure the rewind release button on the camera bottom is pressed before turning the rewind crank. |
