4. Setup
4.1 Unpacking and Inspection
Carefully remove all packaging materials. Inspect the heater for any damage. Ensure all components are present as listed in the packing contents (refer to the full manual for a complete list).
4.2 Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment, typically on the side or back of the heater base.
- Open the battery cover.
- Insert 2 C batteries (included), ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery cover securely.

4.3 Fueling the Heater
- Ensure the heater is turned off and completely cool.
- Unscrew the fuel tank cap located on the top surface of the base.
- Using the provided siphon pump and funnel, carefully add 1-K kerosene to the fuel tank. Do not overfill; the fuel gauge will indicate when it is full (F).
- Screw the fuel tank cap back on securely.
- For first use or after refilling, allow the wick to absorb the kerosene for at least 30 minutes before attempting to ignite. This ensures proper saturation and prevents damage to the wick.

5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Ignition
- Ensure the wick is fully saturated with kerosene (wait 30 minutes after fueling).
- Rotate the wick adjustment knob clockwise to raise the wick to its highest position.
- Press the ignition button (red button) to activate the battery-powered igniter. The wick should light. If it doesn't light immediately, release the button, wait a few seconds, and try again.
- Alternatively, for manual ignition, lift the burner cylinder and use a long lighter or match to ignite the wick directly. Quickly replace the burner cylinder once the flame catches.

5.2 Flame Adjustment
After ignition, allow the flame to stabilize for a few minutes. Use the wick adjustment knob to raise or lower the wick to achieve the desired flame height. An optimal flame is typically a steady, blue-tipped flame without excessive yellow or smoke. Adjusting the flame too high can cause smoking, while too low may result in incomplete combustion.
5.3 Extinguishing the Heater
- To turn off the heater, twist the wick adjustment knob counter-clockwise until the wick is fully lowered and the flame extinguishes.
- For emergency shut-off, locate the manual shut-off lever (often a small switch or lever near the wick adjustment knob) and push it to the "OFF" position.
- Always ensure the flame is completely out before leaving the heater unattended.
5.4 Using as a Cooktop
The Dura Heat DH1051 can be used to heat food or water. Place a pot or kettle directly on the top grate of the heater. Ensure the pot is stable and does not obstruct airflow. Monitor cooking closely. Caution: The top surface will become extremely hot. Use heat-resistant gloves when handling cookware.

6. Maintenance
Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and safety of your Dura Heat DH1051 heater.
6.1 Wick Cleaning and Replacement
- Daily: After each use, allow the heater to cool completely. Burn off any remaining fuel in the wick by letting it run until it self-extinguishes. This helps prevent carbon buildup.
- Weekly/Bi-weekly: Inspect the wick for carbon buildup. If necessary, gently brush the top of the wick with an old toothbrush to remove deposits. Vacuum gently to remove any loose particles.
- Replacement: Wicks will eventually wear out and require replacement. The heater comes with three additional wicks. Refer to the full instruction manual for detailed wick replacement procedures.

Video 5: Detailed steps on how to install a wick on a kerosene heater, a key maintenance task.
6.2 Fuel Storage
Store 1-K kerosene in a clean, clearly marked container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Avoid storing kerosene for extended periods to prevent degradation and water contamination.
7. Troubleshooting
If your heater is not functioning correctly, review the following common issues:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Heater won't light. | Wick not saturated, low fuel, dead batteries, wick too low. | Ensure wick is saturated (wait 30 min), refill fuel, replace batteries, raise wick. |
| Smoky or yellow flame. | Wick too high, dirty wick, poor quality kerosene. | Lower wick slightly, clean wick, use only 1-K kerosene. |
| Heater produces an odor. | Improper fuel, dirty wick, insufficient ventilation. | Use 1-K kerosene, clean wick, ensure proper ventilation. |
| Flame dies down. | Low fuel, water in fuel, wick worn out. | Refill fuel, use a fuel filter (e.g., "Mr. Funnel") to remove water, replace wick. |
