Setup and Installation
Follow these steps to properly install the Werner 40-2HD Caster Kit onto your compatible stepladder.
- Prepare the Ladder: Ensure the ladder is clean and free of debris. If replacing existing casters, carefully remove the old units and any remaining hardware.
- Identify Components: Separate the caster assemblies, shoe feet pads, and all mounting hardware.

- Attach Caster Brackets: Position one aluminum caster bracket onto the bottom rung of the ladder leg. Ensure the bracket aligns with the pre-drilled holes on the ladder.
- Secure with Hardware: Insert the provided screws through the bracket and ladder leg, securing them with nuts and washers. Tighten all hardware firmly using appropriate tools, but do not overtighten.

- Install Shoe Feet Pads: If applicable, install the shoe feet pads onto the bottom of the ladder legs that do not receive casters, or as replacements for existing pads.
- Repeat for Second Caster: Follow steps 3-5 for the second caster assembly on the opposite ladder leg.
- Final Check: Once both casters are installed, gently test the ladder's mobility and stability. Ensure all hardware is tight and the casters roll smoothly.
Operating Instructions
- Moving the Ladder: To move the ladder, ensure no one is on it and that the path is clear. Gently push or pull the ladder to its desired location. The 360-degree swivel casters allow for easy maneuverability.
- Positioning for Use: Once the ladder is in position, ensure the casters are locked (if equipped with locking mechanisms) or that the ladder is otherwise stabilized to prevent accidental movement during use. The design of these casters allows the ladder to rest firmly on its feet when weight is applied, lifting the casters off the ground for stability.
- Navigating Obstacles: The soft rubber wheels are designed to roll over minor door thresholds and uneven surfaces. Exercise caution when moving over significant obstacles.
Maintenance
- Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the casters, brackets, and all mounting hardware for signs of wear, damage, or looseness. Tighten any loose fasteners.
- Cleaning: Clean the casters and wheels regularly to remove dirt, dust, and debris that could impede smooth operation. Use a damp cloth and mild detergent if necessary. Avoid harsh chemicals.
- Lubrication: The casters are generally maintenance-free, but if squeaking or stiffness occurs, a small amount of silicone-based lubricant can be applied to the swivel bearings and wheel axles.
- Storage: Store the ladder with casters in a clean, dry environment when not in use.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Casters do not roll smoothly. | Debris in wheel/swivel, worn bearings, insufficient lubrication. | Clean wheels and swivel. Apply lubricant if needed. Replace casters if bearings are worn. |
| Ladder feels unstable when in use. | Casters not properly disengaged (ladder not resting on feet), loose mounting hardware. | Ensure ladder is fully deployed and weight is on the ladder feet. Check and tighten all mounting hardware. |
| Casters are loose on the ladder leg. | Mounting hardware is loose. | Tighten all screws, nuts, and bolts securing the caster brackets to the ladder. |
