Key Features:

2. Setup and Installation

2.1 Unboxing and Package Contents

Upon unboxing your NETGEAR Centria, verify that all components are present. The standard package includes the router unit, a power adapter, an Ethernet cable, and a tray for 0.75-inch thick HDDs. Depending on your specific model, a disk drive may or may not be included. The Centria is compatible with any standard 3.5-inch SATA hard drive.

2.2 Hard Drive Installation (for Diskless Models)

If your Centria model is diskless, you will need to install a compatible 3.5-inch SATA hard drive to utilize the backup and media server functionalities. Follow these steps:

  1. Step 1: Power Off the Router. Ensure the router is completely turned off. Unplug the power adapter or use the power switch. No lights should be visible on the front panel.
  2. Step 2: Open the Side Door. Gently open the side door of the router to access the internal hard drive bay.
  3. Step 3: Move the Latch. Inside the bay, locate the internal latch that secures the hard drive. Move this latch down and to the side as shown in the video to allow the drive to be inserted freely.
  4. Optional: Insert Tray. If you are installing a 0.75-inch thick hard drive, insert the provided tray into the router first. For larger 1-inch HDDs, remove the tray if present.
  5. Step 4: Insert Hard Drive. Carefully insert your 3.5-inch SATA hard drive into the bay. Ensure the SATA interface (the connectors) is facing upwards. The drive should fit securely into the bay.
  6. Step 5: Return the Latch. Once the hard drive is fully inserted, return the internal latch to its closed position to secure the drive.
  7. Step 6: Close the Outer Door. Close the router's side door firmly.

Note: The side door will not close if the internal latch is not in the closed position or if the hard drive is inserted incorrectly. If the door does not close, re-check the hard drive's insertion and the latch's position.

2.3 Initial Hard Drive Formatting

After installing the hard drive and powering on the router, the Centria may require the drive to be formatted for proper use. If the HDD LED on the front panel glows red, it indicates that formatting is needed. The router will typically detect the new drive and prompt you for formatting. You can choose to format it immediately or later via the router's web interface (NETGEAR genie).

3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Router Functionality

The Centria functions as a high-speed N900 Dual Band Gigabit WiFi router. Connect your modem to the WAN port using an Ethernet cable. Power on the router, and it will broadcast two WiFi networks (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). Use the default WiFi name (SSID) and password found on the product label to connect your devices. For advanced settings, access the NETGEAR genie web interface via a connected computer or the mobile app.

3.2 Automatic Backup

Utilize the internal hard drive for automatic backups of your computers. The Centria supports ReadySHARE Vault for Windows PCs and is compatible with Apple Time Machine for Mac devices. Configure backup schedules and settings through the NETGEAR genie interface to ensure your data is continuously protected.

3.3 Media Server

The Centria acts as a media server, allowing you to store and stream your digital content (photos, videos, music) to various devices on your network. Once the hard drive is installed and formatted, transfer your media files to it. Devices like smart TVs, gaming consoles, and smartphones can then access and play these files. The NETGEAR genie app can assist in managing and playing your media.

3.4 USB 3.0 Ports

The two SuperSpeed USB 3.0 ports allow you to connect external storage devices or multi-function printers. These connected devices can then be shared across your network, providing additional storage or printing capabilities to all connected users.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Firmware Updates

Regularly check for and install firmware updates for your Centria router. Firmware updates often include performance improvements, security patches, and new features. You can typically find firmware updates through the NETGEAR genie interface or the official NETGEAR support website.

4.2 Cleaning

Keep the router clean and free from dust to ensure optimal performance and prevent overheating. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior. Avoid using liquid cleaners or abrasive materials. Ensure ventilation openings are not obstructed.

4.3 Hard Drive Management

Monitor the health and available space of your internal hard drive through the NETGEAR genie interface. Periodically review your backup settings and media files to ensure efficient storage utilization.

5. Troubleshooting

5.1 No Power/Lights

5.2 No Internet Connection

5.3 WiFi Connectivity Issues

5.4 Hard Drive Not Detected or Red HDD Light

5.5 Fan Noise

Some users may notice a slight fan noise. This is generally normal for devices with internal cooling. Ensure the router has adequate ventilation and is not placed in an enclosed space. If the noise becomes excessively loud or unusual, contact support.
