1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the proper installation, use, and maintenance of the NIBCO C7073 3/4 CXF 90 ELB CAST copper alloy solder joint pressure fitting. Please read this manual thoroughly before installation to ensure safe and effective operation.
2. Product Overview
The NIBCO C7073 is a 3/4 inch copper alloy solder joint 90-degree elbow fitting designed for use in above-ground water supply piping systems. It is engineered to change the direction of piping by 90 degrees while adapting to standard male pipe threads.
Key features include:
- 90-degree angle for directional changes in piping.
- Solder connections for secure and leak-free joints.
- Constructed from dezincification resistant cast copper alloy.
- Manufactured in accordance with ASME B16.18 standards.

3. Safety Information
Always prioritize safety during installation and handling. Observe all local plumbing codes and regulations.
- Proposition 65 Warning: This product can expose you to chemicals including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
- Prohibition of Use in U.S. Drinking Water Applications: Use of this product in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. This fitting is intended for non-potable water systems or other approved applications.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and gloves, when handling and installing fittings.
- Ensure proper ventilation when soldering to avoid inhaling fumes.
- Turn off the main water supply before beginning any plumbing work.
- Allow soldered joints to cool completely before pressurizing the system.
4. Installation (Setup)
Proper installation is critical for the longevity and performance of the fitting. This fitting uses solder connections.
4.1 Tools and Materials Required:
- Pipe cutter or hacksaw
- Deburring tool
- Wire brush or abrasive cloth
- Soldering flux
- Lead-free solder (if applicable to local codes)
- Propane torch or similar heat source
- Heat shield (optional, but recommended)
4.2 Installation Steps:
- Prepare Pipes: Cut the copper pipe to the desired length, ensuring a clean, straight cut. Deburr the inside and outside edges of the pipe to remove any burrs that could obstruct flow or damage the fitting.
- Clean Surfaces: Thoroughly clean the outside surface of the pipe end and the inside surface of the fitting's solder cup using a wire brush or abrasive cloth. Surfaces must be bright and free of oxidation for proper solder adhesion.
- Apply Flux: Apply a thin, even coat of soldering flux to both the cleaned pipe end and the inside of the fitting's solder cup.
- Assemble Joint: Insert the fluxed pipe into the fitting's solder cup, ensuring it is fully seated. Twist the pipe slightly to evenly distribute the flux.
- Heat Joint: Apply heat evenly around the circumference of the fitting's solder cup using a torch. Keep the flame moving to avoid overheating one spot.
- Apply Solder: Once the fitting reaches the proper soldering temperature (indicated by the flux bubbling and turning clear), touch the solder to the joint at the point where the pipe enters the fitting. The heat from the fitting should melt the solder, drawing it into the joint by capillary action. Continue feeding solder until a complete ring of solder is visible around the joint.
- Cool and Clean: Remove the heat and allow the joint to cool naturally. Do not disturb the joint while it is cooling. Once cool, wipe away any excess flux residue with a damp cloth.
- Threaded Connection: For the threaded end, apply appropriate pipe sealant or PTFE tape to the male threads of the connecting pipe before screwing it into the fitting. Tighten securely but do not overtighten.
5. Operating Principles
The NIBCO C7073 fitting is a passive component designed to facilitate the flow of fluids within a piping system. Once properly installed, it maintains the integrity of the pipeline, allowing fluid to change direction by 90 degrees without leakage under specified pressure conditions. Its robust construction ensures reliable performance in non-potable water supply applications.
6. Maintenance
NIBCO copper alloy fittings are designed for long-term, maintenance-free operation when properly installed. However, periodic inspection of the piping system is recommended.
- Visual Inspection: Periodically inspect all joints for any signs of leakage, corrosion, or physical damage.
- Pressure Testing: If the system undergoes significant changes or if leaks are suspected, perform a pressure test according to local plumbing codes to verify system integrity.
- Environmental Factors: Ensure the fitting is not exposed to corrosive chemicals or extreme temperatures outside its operational limits, which could compromise its material integrity.
7. Troubleshooting
Most issues with fittings arise from improper installation. Common problems and their solutions are listed below:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Leak at Solder Joint | Insufficient cleaning, improper flux application, insufficient heat, insufficient solder, joint disturbed during cooling. | Drain system, clean joint thoroughly, re-flux, re-heat, and re-solder. Ensure proper technique and allow to cool undisturbed. |
| Leak at Threaded Joint | Insufficient pipe sealant/tape, cross-threading, overtightening causing crack. | Drain system, disassemble joint, clean threads, reapply pipe sealant/tape correctly, and reassemble. Do not overtighten. Inspect for cracks. |
| Reduced Flow | Burrs not removed from pipe, excessive solder inside fitting. | This typically requires cutting out the section and re-installing with proper pipe preparation and soldering technique. |
