Operating

Autofocus (AF) / Manual Focus (MF) Switch

The lens features a switch to select between Autofocus (AF) and Manual Focus (MF) modes. In AF mode, the camera automatically focuses on the subject. In MF mode, you manually adjust the focus ring on the lens. For video recording, the STM motor provides smooth and quiet autofocus.

Image Stabilizer (IS) Switch

The Image Stabilizer (IS) switch allows you to turn the optical image stabilization feature on or off. When activated, the IS system helps reduce blur caused by camera shake, especially useful in low-light conditions or when shooting handheld at longer focal lengths. Dynamic IS is available for movie shooting mode.

Zoom Ring

Rotate the zoom ring to adjust the focal length between 18mm (wide-angle) and 135mm (telephoto). The lens also includes a zoom ring lock to prevent accidental extension when not in use.

Maintenance

Cleaning the Lens

  • Use a lens blower to remove dust and debris from the lens surface.
  • For smudges or fingerprints, use a soft, clean lens cloth and a small amount of lens cleaning solution. Apply the solution to the cloth, not directly to the lens.
  • Avoid touching the glass elements with your fingers.

Storage

  • Always attach the front and rear lens caps when the lens is not in use.
  • Store the lens in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • If storing for extended periods, consider using a desiccant to prevent mold and mildew.

Troubleshooting

Autofocus Not Working

  • Ensure the AF/MF switch on the lens is set to 'AF'.
  • Check if the lens is securely attached to the camera body.
  • Verify that the camera's autofocus settings are correctly configured.
  • Ensure there is sufficient light for the autofocus system to operate effectively.

Images Appear Blurry

  • Check if the Image Stabilizer (IS) switch is set to 'ON' when shooting handheld, especially in low light or at longer focal lengths.
  • Ensure the shutter speed is fast enough to prevent motion blur, particularly for moving subjects.
  • Verify that the lens is clean and free from smudges or dust.
  • Confirm that the lens is properly focused on your subject.
