Intermatic WP1000HC Weatherproof While-In-Use Cover Instruction Manual

Model: WP1000HC | Brand: Intermatic

Product Overview

The Intermatic WP1000HC is a 1-gang, horizontal mount, non-metallic weatherproof cover designed for use with electrical outlets. This "while-in-use" cover provides protection for electrical connections even when a cord is plugged into the outlet, making it ideal for outdoor or damp locations. It is constructed from durable polycarbonate material and features a clear design, allowing for easy visual inspection of the outlet. The cover includes multiple insert types to accommodate various receptacle configurations, including duplex, Decora/GFCI, and combination toggle switch or single receptacles.

Key features include a 2-1/4 inch depth, a 0.5 inch cord diameter capacity, and a 0.78 inch exit port length. It also offers a padlockable option for added security.

Setup and Installation

Before beginning installation, ensure power to the outlet is turned off at the circuit breaker to prevent electrical shock. This cover is designed for horizontal mounting over a single-gang electrical box.

  1. Prepare the Outlet Box: Ensure the existing electrical box is securely mounted and free from debris.
  2. Select the Correct Insert: The WP1000HC comes with three separate insert types:
    • Duplex Receptacle
    • Decora/GFCI Receptacle
    • Combination Toggle Switch or Single Receptacle (with diameters of 1.375", 1.625", or 1.75")
Choose the insert that matches your specific outlet configuration. Snap the chosen insert into the back plate of the cover.
  3. Mount the Back Plate: Align the back plate of the weatherproof cover with the screw holes on your electrical box. Use the provided screws (or appropriate screws for your box) to securely fasten the back plate to the electrical box. Ensure it is flush and stable.
  4. Attach the Cover: Hinge the clear cover onto the back plate. Ensure the hinge pins are properly seated.
  5. Secure the Cover: Close the clear cover. It should snap securely into place. If using the padlockable option, insert a padlock (not included) through the designated holes for added security.
  6. Restore Power: Once the cover is fully installed and secured, you may restore power to the circuit breaker.

Operating Instructions

The Intermatic WP1000HC cover is designed for simple operation.

  • To Use the Outlet: Open the clear cover by unlatching it. Plug your electrical cord into the receptacle. The cover is designed to close over the cord while it is plugged in, providing continuous weather protection.
  • To Close the Cover: Ensure the electrical cord (if present) is routed through the designated exit port at the bottom of the cover. Close the clear cover firmly until it latches securely. This ensures a weatherproof seal.
  • Padlock Option: If desired, a padlock can be inserted through the holes on the cover to prevent unauthorized access or tampering.

Maintenance

The Intermatic WP1000HC requires minimal maintenance to ensure its longevity and effectiveness.

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the cover with a damp cloth to remove dirt, dust, or debris. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these may damage the polycarbonate material.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the cover for any signs of damage, cracks, or wear, especially around the hinges and latch. Ensure the seal remains intact. If any damage is observed, replace the cover to maintain weatherproof integrity.
  • Seal Integrity: Ensure the cover closes tightly and the seal around the edges is not compromised by debris or damage. A proper seal is crucial for weatherproof performance.
