Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when using the wheelchair. Read and understand all instructions before operation. Ensure all components are securely fastened and in good working order before each use. This product is designed to support up to 300 pounds. It is the user's responsibility to ensure the correct item is chosen for their needs.

  • Always engage the wheel locks when transferring in or out of the wheelchair, or when stationary.
  • Do not exceed the maximum weight capacity of 300 lbs.
  • Avoid uneven surfaces or obstacles that could cause the wheelchair to tip.
  • Ensure footrests are properly positioned and secured to prevent feet from dragging or getting caught.
  • Seek assistance when navigating inclines, declines, or rough terrain.

Setup

The Rebel Lightweight Wheelchair comes mostly pre-assembled, requiring minimal setup before first use. Follow these steps to prepare your wheelchair:

  1. Unfolding the Wheelchair: Place the folded wheelchair on a flat surface. Gently pull the two side frames apart until the chair is fully open and the seat is flat. Ensure the locking mechanism engages securely.
  2. Attaching Rear Wheels (if detached): If the quick-release rear wheels are detached for transport, align the axle with the wheel hub and push the quick-release button on the center of the wheel. Insert the axle into the hub until it clicks into place. Pull on the wheel to ensure it is securely fastened.
  3. Attaching Footrests: Align the footrest attachment points with the corresponding pins on the wheelchair frame. Push the silver clip back, slide the holes over the nubs, and then swing the footrest into place. Release the clip to lock it. Adjust the height of the footrests to ensure comfortable leg positioning, with knees at approximately a 90-degree angle.
  4. Adjusting Armrests: The desk-style armrests can be flipped up for easier transfers. To do so, locate the release mechanism near the armrest pivot point and lift the armrest.

Operating Instructions

This section provides guidance on operating your Drive Medical Rebel Lightweight Wheelchair effectively and safely.

  1. Engaging/Disengaging Brakes: Locate the brake levers on each side of the large rear wheels. Push the lever forward to engage the brake and lock the wheels. Pull the lever back to disengage the brake and allow the wheels to roll freely. Always engage brakes when stationary or transferring.
  2. Self-Propelling: For independent mobility, grasp the hand rims on the large rear wheels. Push forward on both rims simultaneously to move straight. To turn, push harder on one rim while easing pressure on the other.
  3. Assisted Propulsion: When an attendant is pushing the wheelchair, ensure the user's feet are securely on the footrests. The attendant should use the push handles at the back of the chair.
  4. Navigating Obstacles: For small bumps or thresholds, the attendant can use the tip levers (small bars near the rear wheels) to slightly tilt the wheelchair back, lifting the front casters over the obstacle.
  5. Folding for Storage/Transport: To fold the wheelchair, first remove the footrests. Then, grasp the center of the seat fabric and pull upwards. The frame will collapse inward. The backrest can also be folded down by releasing the pins on the levers behind the backrest for a more compact profile.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your wheelchair.

  • Cleaning: The nylon upholstery is durable and easy to clean. Wipe down the frame and seat with a damp cloth and mild soap as needed. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
  • Wheel and Tire Care: The wheelchair features non-marking polyurethane tires that are flat-free and require minimal maintenance. Periodically check wheels for debris and ensure they spin freely.
  • Brake Inspection: Regularly inspect the brakes to ensure they engage firmly and hold the wheels securely. Adjust if necessary, or consult a qualified technician.
  • Hardware Check: Periodically check all nuts, bolts, and fasteners to ensure they are tight. Do not overtighten.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your wheelchair, refer to the following common troubleshooting tips:

  • Difficulty Folding: Ensure the footrests are removed and the seat fabric is pulled up completely. Check for any obstructions in the folding mechanism.
  • Wheels Not Rolling Smoothly: Inspect wheels for tangled hair, lint, or other debris. Clean the axles and bearings if necessary. Ensure brakes are fully disengaged.
  • Brakes Not Holding: Check if the brake levers are fully engaged. If the wheels still move, the brakes may need adjustment or professional servicing.
  • Squeaking Noises: Apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to moving parts and pivot points. Avoid using oil-based lubricants that can attract dirt.
