5. Setup
5.1. Battery Installation
The Cherub WST-520GB operates on two AAA batteries. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the unit. Open the cover, insert the batteries ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as marked, and then securely close the cover.
5.2. Connecting Your Instrument
For Electric Instruments: Connect a standard 1/4-inch instrument cable from your instrument's output jack to the INPUT jack on the tuner. If you wish to send the tuned signal to an amplifier, connect another 1/4-inch cable from the tuner's OUTPUT jack to your amplifier's input.
For Acoustic Instruments: No cable connection is required. The tuner's built-in microphone will detect the sound of your instrument.
6. Operating Instructions
6.1. Powering On/Off
Press and hold the ON---CALIB / OFF button for approximately 2 seconds to power the tuner on or off.
6.2. Selecting Tuning Mode
After powering on, the tuner will display its current mode. Press the ITEM / FLAT button repeatedly to cycle through the available instrument modes, such as Guitar, Bass, or Chromatic. Select the mode appropriate for your instrument.
6.3. Tuning Your Instrument
- Play a single note on your instrument. Ensure the note sustains long enough for the tuner to detect it.
- Observe the display and LED indicators:
- If the left red LED illuminates and the needle points to the left (towards -50), the note is flat.
- If the right red LED illuminates and the needle points to the right (towards +50), the note is sharp.
- If the green LED illuminates and the needle is centered (at 0), the note is in tune.
- Adjust your instrument's tuning pegs until the green LED illuminates and the needle is precisely centered on the display.
6.4. Using the Flat Function
If you need to tune your instrument to a lower pitch (e.g., half-step down), press the ITEM / FLAT button briefly after selecting your instrument mode. The display will indicate the activated flat setting (e.g., 'b' for one half-step flat). Press again to cycle through flat settings or return to standard tuning.
7. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the tuner's exterior. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, solvents, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the finish or internal components.
- Battery Replacement: Replace the AAA batteries when the display dims, the LEDs become faint, or the unit fails to power on. If the tuner will not be used for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent potential leakage and damage.
- Storage: Store the tuner in a dry environment, away from extreme temperatures, high humidity, and direct sunlight. Protect it from physical shocks or drops.
8. Troubleshooting
8.1. Tuner does not power on.
- Check battery installation. Ensure batteries are inserted with correct polarity.
- Replace batteries with fresh ones, as they may be depleted.
8.2. Tuner is not detecting sound.
- For electric instruments: Ensure the instrument cable is securely connected to the INPUT jack. Verify that the cable and instrument are functioning correctly. Increase the instrument's volume output.
- For acoustic instruments: Ensure the instrument is played loudly enough for the built-in microphone (MIC) to detect the sound. Try moving the tuner closer to the sound source.
8.3. Tuning seems inaccurate.
- Verify that the correct instrument mode (Guitar, Bass, Chromatic) is selected.
- Minimize ambient noise that might interfere with the microphone's detection.
- If using the input jack, ensure the cable connection is stable and free from interference.
