Burndy YS31 Hylink Splice Long Barrel Instruction Manual

Model: YS31

Introduction

This instruction manual provides essential information for the proper installation and use of the Burndy YS31 Hylink Splice. The YS31 is a long barrel copper compression splice designed for joining 350 kcmil AWG conductors. It is suitable for a wide range of electrical applications, from 600 Volts up to 35 kV, and is rated for 90 degrees Celsius. Adherence to these instructions is crucial for ensuring a safe, reliable, and compliant electrical connection.

Safety Information

WARNING: Electrical work should only be performed by qualified personnel. Failure to follow proper safety procedures can result in serious injury or death.

  • Always de-energize circuits before beginning any work. Verify with appropriate testing equipment.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including insulated gloves, safety glasses, and flame-resistant clothing.
  • Ensure all tools are in good working condition and are suitable for the task.
  • Refer to local electrical codes and standards for additional safety requirements.

Setup and Installation

The Burndy YS31 Hylink Splice is designed for reliable copper conductor connections. Proper preparation and crimping are critical for optimal performance.

  1. Conductor Preparation:
Measure and strip the insulation from the 350 kcmil AWG copper conductors to a length of 2-1/16 inches (52.39 mm). Ensure the conductor strands are clean and free of oxidation or damage.
  2. Splice Inspection:
Visually inspect the YS31 splice for any damage or deformities before use.
  3. Conductor Insertion:
Insert the stripped end of the first conductor into one end of the YS31 splice until it meets the center conductor stop. The splice features four (4) center conductor stops to ensure proper conductor insertion depth.
  4. Crimping:
Using a Burndy-approved crimping tool and die set for 350 kcmil copper connectors, perform the required number of crimps according to the tool manufacturer's instructions. Ensure each crimp is complete and properly formed.
  5. Second Conductor:
Insert the stripped end of the second conductor into the opposite end of the YS31 splice until it meets the center conductor stop. Repeat the crimping process as described in step 4.
  6. Final Inspection:
After crimping both conductors, visually inspect the completed splice for proper crimp formation and secure conductor retention. The splice should exhibit high pull-out force, providing secure mechanical and electrical properties.

Operating Characteristics

Once properly installed, the Burndy YS31 Hylink Splice functions as a permanent electrical connection between two conductors. Its characteristics include:

  • Voltage Rating: Suitable for applications from 600 Volts up to 35 kV.
  • Temperature Rating: Rated for continuous operation at 90 degrees Celsius.
  • Certifications: UL Listed and CSA Certified, ensuring compliance with recognized safety and performance standards.
  • Application: Ideal for heavy-duty applications requiring a robust and reliable copper compression splice.

Maintenance

The Burndy YS31 Hylink Splice is designed for maintenance-free operation once correctly installed. Regular maintenance is generally not required for the splice itself. However, in critical applications or environments subject to vibration or extreme conditions, periodic visual inspection of the connection may be prudent to ensure its integrity. Any signs of corrosion, physical damage, or overheating should be addressed immediately by qualified personnel.

Troubleshooting

Most issues related to compression splices stem from improper installation. If problems arise, consider the following:

  • Poor Connection/High Resistance: This can be caused by insufficient crimps, incorrect die selection, damaged conductors, or improper conductor insertion depth. Re-evaluate the installation process and ensure all steps were followed precisely.
  • Overheating: An overheating splice indicates a high-resistance connection. This is a serious safety hazard. Immediately de-energize the circuit and inspect the splice. Causes can include those listed for poor connection, or using the splice outside its rated capacity.
  • Physical Damage: If the splice appears physically damaged after installation, it may compromise its integrity. Replace any damaged splice.

If troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, or if you are unsure about the integrity of the connection, consult with a qualified electrician or contact Burndy technical support.
