4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Unpacking

4.2 Mounting the Grinder

For safe operation, the DSM 200 must be securely mounted to a workbench or stand. Use appropriate bolts and washers (not included) to fasten the grinder through the mounting holes in its base.

• Choose a stable, level surface capable of supporting the grinder's weight and operational forces.
• Mark the mounting hole locations on your workbench.
• Drill pilot holes if necessary.
• Secure the grinder using bolts, lock washers, and nuts. Ensure it is firmly attached and does not wobble.

4.3 Installing/Adjusting Components

Before first use, ensure all protective components are correctly installed and adjusted.

• Eye Shields: Attach the plexiglass eye shields to their designated mounting points. Adjust them so they provide maximum protection without obstructing your view of the workpiece.
• Tool Rests: Position the tool rests as close as possible to the grinding wheels, ideally within 1/16 inch (1.5 mm), without touching the wheel. This minimizes the risk of the workpiece being jammed between the rest and the wheel. Tighten the tool rest locking screws securely.
• Spark Deflectors: Ensure spark deflectors are in place and properly positioned to direct sparks away from the operator.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Before Starting

• Verify that the grinder is securely mounted.
• Check that the grinding wheels are free from cracks or damage.
• Ensure eye shields and tool rests are properly adjusted and secured.
• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hearing protection, and gloves.
• Ensure the power cord is in good condition and connected to a suitable 230V power outlet.

5.2 Starting and Stopping

• To Start: Press the green "ON" button or flip the switch to the "ON" position. Allow the grinder to reach full operating speed (2950 rpm) before applying a workpiece.
• To Stop: Press the red "OFF" button or flip the switch to the "OFF" position. Wait for the grinding wheels to come to a complete stop before leaving the machine unattended.

5.3 Grinding Techniques

• Always use the tool rest to support the workpiece.
• Apply light, even pressure. Forcing the workpiece against the wheel can cause overheating, damage to the workpiece, or wheel breakage.
• Move the workpiece across the face of the wheel to ensure even wear and prevent grooving.
• Use the coarse grit wheel (Grit 36) for rapid material removal and rough shaping.
• Use the fine grit wheel (Grit 60) for sharpening, finishing, and deburring.
• Periodically cool hot workpieces in water to prevent overheating and loss of temper.
• Never grind soft materials like wood or plastic on this machine.

• Replace the wheel guard.
• Before use, perform a test run for a minute to ensure the wheel runs true and there are no unusual vibrations. Stand clear during this test.

6.3 Dressing Grinding Wheels

Over time, grinding wheels can become glazed or out of round. Use a wheel dresser to restore the wheel's cutting surface and shape.

• With the grinder running, hold the wheel dresser firmly on the tool rest.
• Slowly and evenly move the dresser across the face of the grinding wheel until the surface is clean and true.
• Wear extra eye protection and a dust mask during this process.
