Product Features
The STANLEY W38463 Outdoor Timer offers the following key features:
- Automatic Photocell Sensor: Detects ambient light levels to automatically activate connected devices at dusk and deactivate them at dawn.
- Customizable Timer Options: Select from various pre-set modes including Dusk-to-Dawn, or countdown options for 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 hours after dusk.
- Weather-Resistant Design: Constructed for durability in outdoor environments, suitable for various weather conditions.
- Energy-Saving Operation: Helps reduce power consumption by ensuring devices operate only when needed.
- Dual Outlets: Controls two separate devices simultaneously from a single timer unit.
- Easy Plug-In Operation: Simple setup requiring only connection to an outdoor outlet and selection of the desired mode.
Setup and Installation
- Choose a Location: Select an outdoor location that is protected from direct heavy rainfall and where the photocell sensor (located on the front of the timer) will receive unobstructed ambient light. Avoid locations where artificial light sources (e.g., porch lights, streetlights) might shine directly on the sensor, as this could interfere with its operation.
- Plug in the Timer: Insert the timer's plug into a 120V AC, 60Hz GFCI-protected outdoor electrical outlet.
- Connect Devices: Plug your outdoor lights or appliances into the two grounded outlets on the bottom of the timer. Ensure the total wattage of connected devices does not exceed the timer's maximum rating (refer to Specifications).

Operating Instructions
The timer features a rotary dial for selecting the desired operating mode. Rotate the dial clockwise or counter-clockwise to align the indicator with your chosen setting.
- OFF: Devices connected to the timer will remain off.
- ON: Devices connected to the timer will remain continuously on, regardless of light conditions.
- DUSK-DAWN: The timer will automatically turn on connected devices at dusk and turn them off at dawn. This mode utilizes the built-in photocell sensor.
- 2HR, 4HR, 5HR, 6HR, 7HR, 8HR, 9HR, 10HR: These are countdown timer modes. When set to one of these options, the timer will turn on connected devices at dusk and keep them on for the selected duration (e.g., 4 hours) before turning them off. The cycle repeats daily.
Photocell Sensor: The small circular sensor on the front of the timer detects ambient light. Ensure it is not obstructed for proper Dusk-to-Dawn or countdown operation.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Periodically wipe the timer with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Ensure the timer is unplugged before cleaning.
- Photocell: Keep the photocell sensor clean and free from dirt, dust, or obstructions to ensure accurate light detection.
- Storage: If storing the timer for an extended period, unplug it and store it in a cool, dry place.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Timer does not turn on. | No power to the outlet. Timer dial set to OFF. Connected device is faulty. | Check the GFCI outlet and circuit breaker. Rotate the dial to ON, DUSK-DAWN, or a countdown setting. Test the connected device in a different outlet. |
| Lights stay on during the day or turn off too early. | Photocell sensor is obstructed or exposed to artificial light. | Ensure the photocell is clean and free from obstructions. Relocate the timer if artificial light sources are interfering. |
| Lights do not turn on at dusk. | Photocell sensor is not detecting darkness. Timer dial not set to a dusk-activated mode. | Check photocell for obstructions. Ensure the dial is set to DUSK-DAWN or a countdown mode. |
