4. Setup
4.1 Attaching the Video Head to a Tripod
- Ensure your tripod is stable and capable of supporting the combined weight of the S4 head and your camera equipment.
- Locate the 3/8"-16 threaded mounting hole on the base of the S4 video head.
- Screw the video head onto the tripod's mounting screw until it is firmly secured. Some tripods may require an adapter from 1/4"-20 to 3/8"-16.
- Tighten any locking mechanisms on your tripod to prevent the head from rotating unintentionally.

4.2 Mounting the Camera
- Attach the quick release plate to the bottom of your camera using the 1/4"-20 or 3/8"-16 screw. Ensure it is tightened securely to prevent rotation.
- Unlock the quick release plate clamp on the video head by pulling the blue lever.
- Slide the camera with the attached quick release plate into the clamp on the video head.
- Push the blue lever back to lock the quick release plate securely in place. Verify the camera is firmly attached before releasing your grip.
4.3 Balancing the Camera
Proper camera balance is crucial for smooth operation and effective counterbalance. The S4 features a sliding quick release plate for precise balancing.
- With the camera mounted, slightly loosen the quick release plate clamp (if your camera is heavy, support it with one hand).
- Slide the camera forwards or backwards on the quick release plate until the camera remains level when the tilt lock is disengaged.
- Once balanced, securely tighten the quick release plate clamp.
5. Operation
5.1 Pan and Tilt Adjustments
- Pan Lock: The knob located at the base of the head controls the 360-degree panning rotation. Loosen to pan, tighten to lock.
- Tilt Lock: The larger knob on the side of the head controls the vertical tilt movement. Loosen to tilt, tighten to lock.

5.2 Drag Control
The S4 video head features adjustable drag for both pan and tilt movements, allowing for smooth and controlled camera operation. The drag control knobs are typically integrated with the pan and tilt lock knobs or located nearby. Adjust these to achieve your desired level of resistance for fluid motion.
5.3 Pan Bar Handle
Attach the pan bar handle to the designated port on the side of the video head. This handle provides leverage for precise and smooth panning and tilting movements. The angle of the pan bar can often be adjusted for user comfort.
6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the video head after each use. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by immediate drying. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials.
- Storage: Store the video head in a clean, dry environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Inspection: Periodically check all screws and connections to ensure they are tight. Do not attempt to disassemble the fluid head mechanism.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Camera not stable on head. | Quick release plate not fully locked or improperly attached to camera. | Ensure the quick release plate is securely fastened to the camera and the blue lever on the head is fully engaged. |
| Jerky pan/tilt movements. | Drag settings too tight or too loose; camera not balanced. | Adjust pan and tilt drag controls. Re-balance the camera on the quick release plate. |
| Head feels stiff or difficult to move. | Locks are engaged; cold temperatures affecting fluid. | Disengage pan and tilt locks. Allow the head to warm up in cold conditions. |
