Operating the Lens
Focus Mode Switch (A/M)
The lens features a focus mode switch to select between autofocus and manual focus.
- A (Autofocus with manual override): The camera focuses automatically. You can manually adjust focus by rotating the focus ring after autofocus has been achieved.
- M (Manual focus): Focus manually by rotating the focus ring.
Vibration Reduction (VR) Switch (ON/OFF)
The VR function reduces blur caused by camera shake, allowing for sharper images at slower shutter speeds.
- ON: Activates Vibration Reduction. Recommended for most handheld shooting situations.
- OFF: Deactivates Vibration Reduction. Recommended when using a tripod or when shooting at very fast shutter speeds where VR is not necessary.
Note: VR may not be effective in all shooting conditions, such as extremely fast-moving subjects or excessive camera movement.
Zoom Ring
Rotate the zoom ring to change the focal length from 24mm (wide-angle) to 85mm (telephoto). The lens extends and retracts as you zoom.
Aperture
The lens has a variable maximum aperture of f/3.5 at 24mm and f/4.5 at 85mm. The aperture is controlled via the camera body.
Maintenance
Cleaning the Lens
- Lens Surfaces: Use a lens blower brush to remove dust and loose particles. For smudges or fingerprints, apply a small amount of lens cleaning solution to a clean microfiber lens cloth and gently wipe the surface in a circular motion.
- Lens Body: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use organic solvents like paint thinner or benzene.
Caution: Never touch the lens surface with your fingers or use abrasive materials for cleaning.
Storage
When not in use, store the lens with both front and rear caps attached, preferably in the provided CL-1118 semi-soft lens case, away from direct sunlight, high temperatures, and humidity.

Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your lens, consider the following common solutions:
- Lens not focusing:
- Ensure the camera's focus mode is set to AF (autofocus) and the lens's focus mode switch is set to A.
- Check for sufficient light and contrast in the scene.
- Clean the lens contacts on both the lens and camera body.
- Images are blurry:
- Verify that the VR switch on the lens is set to ON for handheld shooting, or OFF if on a tripod.
- Check your camera's shutter speed; a faster shutter speed can reduce motion blur.
- Ensure the lens is clean and free of smudges.
- Lens not recognized by camera:
- Turn off the camera, remove the lens, and reattach it securely.
- Clean the electrical contacts on both the lens and camera body with a clean, dry cloth.
If problems persist, consult a qualified Nikon service representative.
