BRAEBURN 2020 Universal Thermostat User Manual

Model: 2020 | Brand: Braeburn

Introduction

This manual provides comprehensive instructions for the installation, operation, and maintenance of your Braeburn 2020 Universal Thermostat. This thermostat is designed for single-stage heating or cooling systems, including single-stage heat pumps and 250mv-750mv millivolt heating systems. It offers flexible programming options including 7-day, 5-2 day, or non-programmable modes to suit various scheduling needs.

Safety Information

Always turn off power to the heating/cooling system at the main fuse or circuit breaker panel before installing or servicing the thermostat. Read all instructions carefully before proceeding with installation or operation. Improper installation can damage the thermostat or the heating/cooling system.

Installation

1. Turn Off Power

Before beginning installation, ensure the power to your heating and cooling system is completely turned off at the circuit breaker or fuse box. This prevents electrical shock and damage to the equipment.

2. Remove Old Thermostat

Carefully remove the cover of your old thermostat. Take a picture of the existing wiring connections for reference. Label each wire with the terminal designation it was connected to (e.g., R, W, Y, G, C). Disconnect the wires and remove the old thermostat's mounting plate.

3. Mount New Wall Plate

Position the Braeburn 2020 wall plate against the wall where the old thermostat was located. Use the provided screws and wall anchors to secure the wall plate. Ensure the wires pass through the opening in the wall plate.

4. Wire the Thermostat

Connect the labeled wires to the corresponding terminals on the new Braeburn 2020 wall plate. Refer to the wiring diagram below for common configurations. If your old thermostat had a 'C' wire, connect it to the 'C' terminal on the new thermostat for continuous 24V AC power. If no 'C' wire is present, the thermostat will operate on battery power.

Common Wiring Diagram
TerminalDescription
R24V AC Heating Power (often Red wire)
WHeating Call (often White wire)
YCooling Call (often Yellow wire)
GFan (often Green wire)
C24V AC Common (often Blue or Black wire - optional for battery operation)

Note: This thermostat is compatible with single-stage systems. For heat pump systems, ensure proper configuration in the setup menu.

5. Install Batteries and Attach Thermostat

Insert the two AA alkaline batteries into the battery compartment on the back of the thermostat unit. Align the thermostat with the wall plate and gently push it onto the plate until it snaps securely into place.

6. Restore Power

Return to your main fuse or circuit breaker panel and restore power to your heating and cooling system.

Setup and Initial Configuration

Upon initial power-up or after a reset, the thermostat will require basic setup.

1. Set Current Time and Day

  1. Press the DAY/TIME button.
  2. Use the UP or DOWN arrow buttons to adjust the hour. Press DAY/TIME again to confirm and move to minutes.
  3. Use the UP or DOWN arrow buttons to adjust the minutes. Press DAY/TIME again to confirm and move to the day of the week.
  4. Use the UP or DOWN arrow buttons to select the current day. Press RETURN to save and exit.

2. Installer Setup Menu

The installer setup menu allows configuration for specific system types. Consult a qualified HVAC technician if unsure about these settings.

  • System Type: Configure for conventional (gas/electric) or heat pump systems.
  • Fan Operation: Set fan operation during heating cycles (e.g., gas furnace typically controls its own fan).
  • Temperature Display: Select Fahrenheit or Celsius.
  • Programming Mode: Choose 7-day, 5-2 day, or non-programmable.

Operating the Thermostat

Image: Front view of the Braeburn 2020 Universal Thermostat. The display shows "73" and "OFF". Below the display are buttons labeled "PROG", "HOLD", "RETURN", "DAY/TIME". On the left, a slider switch for "SYSTEM" with options "COOL", "OFF", "HEAT". On the right, a slider switch for "FAN" with options "AUTO", "ON". Up and Down arrow buttons are located to the right of the main display.

1. System Mode Selection

Use the SYSTEM switch on the left side of the thermostat to select the desired operating mode:

  • COOL: The thermostat will operate your cooling system.
  • OFF: The heating and cooling systems are turned off.
  • HEAT: The thermostat will operate your heating system.

2. Fan Mode Selection

Use the FAN switch on the right side of the thermostat to select the desired fan operation:

  • AUTO: The fan runs only when the heating or cooling system is actively operating. This is the most common setting.
  • ON: The fan runs continuously, regardless of whether the heating or cooling system is active.

3. Adjusting Temperature

In any operating mode (HEAT or COOL), use the UP or DOWN arrow buttons to adjust the desired setpoint temperature. The display will show the new setpoint temporarily.

4. Hold Function (Temporary Override)

Press the HOLD button to temporarily override the programmed schedule. The thermostat will maintain the current setpoint temperature indefinitely until the HOLD button is pressed again or the system mode is changed. The word "HOLD" will appear on the display.

Programming (7-Day or 5-2 Day Modes)

If your thermostat is configured for 7-day or 5-2 day programming, you can set custom schedules for different times of the day and week. The thermostat allows for four program periods per day: Morning, Day, Evening, and Night.

1. Entering Program Mode

Press the PROG button. The display will show the current program period (e.g., "MORN") and the associated setpoint temperature and time.

2. Setting Program Periods

  1. While in program mode, use the DAY/TIME button to cycle through the days of the week (for 7-day programming) or between Weekdays (Mon-Fri) and Weekend (Sat-Sun) for 5-2 day programming.
  2. Use the PROG button to cycle through the four program periods (Morning, Day, Evening, Night) for the selected day(s).
  3. For each program period, use the UP or DOWN arrow buttons to adjust the desired start time and setpoint temperature for both heating and cooling (if applicable).
  4. After setting all desired program periods for a day or group of days, press RETURN to save and exit program mode.

3. Adaptive Recovery Mode (ARM)

ARM allows the thermostat to activate the heating or cooling system prior to a scheduled program period to ensure the desired temperature is reached by the start of that period. This feature is typically enabled in the installer setup menu.

4. Temporary Program Override

If you adjust the temperature using the UP or DOWN arrow buttons while in normal operating mode (not HOLD), the thermostat will temporarily override the current program setpoint until the next scheduled program period begins. The display will show "TEMP HOLD" or similar indication.

Maintenance

1. Battery Replacement

When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the two AA alkaline batteries immediately. To replace, gently pull the thermostat unit straight off the wall plate, replace the batteries, and then snap the unit back onto the wall plate. Settings are typically retained during battery replacement due to non-volatile memory.

2. Cleaning

Clean the thermostat's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Avoid spraying liquids directly onto the thermostat.

3. Filter Check Monitor

The thermostat may include a filter check monitor that reminds you to change your system's air filter. When the "FILTER" indicator appears, change your filter and then press the RESET button (usually a small recessed button) to clear the reminder.

Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions
ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Thermostat display is blank.Dead batteries; No 24V AC power.Replace batteries. Check circuit breaker for HVAC system. Ensure 'C' wire is connected if using 24V AC power.
