Hanna Instruments HI98304 DIST4 EC and TDS Tester Instruction Manual

Model: HI98304

Introduction

The Hanna Instruments HI98304 DIST4 is a rugged, reliable, and pocket-sized tester designed for quick and accurate measurements of Electrical Conductivity (EC) and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). This device is suitable for various applications including drinking water analysis, water conditioning, reverse osmosis systems, cooling towers, wastewater treatment, laboratories, agriculture, aquaculture, aquariums, hydroponics, and the printing industry. Its amperometric graphite electrode ensures consistent and dependable results by resisting oxidation.

Setup

1. Battery Installation

The HI98304 tester requires one CR2 battery for operation. To install or replace the battery:

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the tester.
  2. Open the compartment cover.
  3. Insert the CR2 battery, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Securely close the battery compartment cover.

2. Initial Calibration

For accurate measurements, the tester requires a one-point manual calibration. It is recommended to perform calibration before first use and periodically thereafter.

  1. Ensure the electrode is clean and dry.
  2. Submerge the electrode tip into the appropriate calibration solution (HI70039 or HI70030).
  3. Locate the trimmer on the side of the tester.
  4. Using a small screwdriver, carefully adjust the trimmer until the display reads the value of the calibration solution.
  5. Rinse the electrode with distilled water after calibration.

Operating Instructions

1. Taking Measurements

To obtain an EC or TDS reading:

  1. Remove the protective cap from the electrode.
  2. Turn on the tester using the power button.
  3. Immerse the electrode tip into the sample solution, ensuring the liquid level is above the sensing portion of the electrode.
  4. Gently stir the tester to remove any air bubbles and allow the reading to stabilize.
  5. Read the value displayed on the LCD screen. The unit of measurement (mS/cm) will be indicated.
  6. After measurement, rinse the electrode with distilled water and replace the protective cap.

2. Understanding Readings

The HI98304 displays readings in mS/cm (milliSiemens per centimeter) for Electrical Conductivity. The device automatically compensates for temperature variations between 0 to 50 ℃ (32 to 122 ℉).

Maintenance

1. Electrode Cleaning

Regular cleaning of the electrode is crucial for maintaining accuracy and extending the life of your tester.

  • After each use, rinse the electrode thoroughly with distilled or deionized water.
  • If the electrode appears dirty or readings become erratic, clean it using a mild cleaning solution specifically designed for EC/TDS probes. Avoid abrasive materials.
  • Never touch the graphite pins of the electrode with your fingers, as oils and residues can affect performance.

2. Storage

When not in use, ensure the protective cap is securely placed over the electrode. Store the tester in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your HI98304 tester, consider the following:

  • Inaccurate or Erratic Readings:
    • Ensure the electrode is clean. Refer to the Electrode Cleaning section.
    • Perform a calibration. Refer to the Initial Calibration section.
    • Check battery level. Replace the battery if low.
  • No Display:
    • Verify the battery is correctly installed and has sufficient charge. Replace if necessary.
    • Ensure the power button is fully pressed.
  • Slow Response Time:
    • Clean the electrode.
    • Allow sufficient time for the reading to stabilize in the sample solution.
