Introduction

The AbleNet iTalk2 is a portable Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device designed to facilitate nonverbal communication. It features two message buttons and multiple recording levels, allowing users to store and play back personalized messages. This manual provides instructions for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your iTalk2 device.

Setup

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove the iTalk2 device from its packaging. Inspect for any visible damage.
  2. Battery Installation:

    Locate the battery compartment on the underside of the device. Open the compartment and insert four (4) AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated. Close the compartment securely.

  3. Power On:

    Locate the power switch on the back of the device. Slide it to the "ON" position. The device is now ready for use.

  4. Recording Messages:
    1. Press and hold the RECORD button located on the back of the device until the record indicator light illuminates.
    2. Select the desired message level (1, 2, or 3) using the Level switch on the side of the device.
    3. Press and hold one of the large message buttons (red or yellow) while speaking clearly into the microphone. Release the button when your message is complete.
    4. Repeat step 'c' for the second message button to record a different message for the same level.
    5. To record messages for additional levels, repeat steps 'b' through 'd'.
    6. Press the RECORD button again to exit recording mode and save your messages.

Operating Instructions

  1. Playing Messages:

    Once messages are recorded, simply press either the red or yellow message button to play the corresponding message for the currently selected level.

  2. Adjusting Volume:

    Use the volume control switch located on the back of the device to increase or decrease the playback volume to a comfortable listening level.

  3. Switching Levels:

    To access different sets of recorded messages, slide the Level switch on the side of the device to select Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3. Each level provides two unique message slots.

  4. External Device Connectivity:

    The iTalk2 includes input/output jacks on the back. These can be used to connect external switches for alternative activation methods or external speakers for amplified sound output.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: To clean the device, gently wipe its surfaces with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or submerging the device in any liquid.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace the AA batteries when the device's sound output becomes weak, distorted, or if the device fails to power on. Always use new batteries and dispose of old ones responsibly.
  • Storage: When not in active use, store the iTalk2 in a cool, dry environment, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Troubleshooting

  • No Sound Output:
    • Ensure the power switch is in the "ON" position.
    • Check that the batteries are correctly installed and have sufficient charge. Replace if necessary.
    • Adjust the volume control to an audible level.
    • Verify that messages have been successfully recorded for the selected level.
  • Distorted or Unclear Sound:
    • Replace the batteries with fresh ones.
    • Ensure messages were recorded in a quiet environment and that the microphone was not obstructed.
  • Difficulty Recording Messages:
    • Confirm that the RECORD button is pressed and held until the indicator light appears before attempting to record.
    • Speak clearly and directly into the microphone.
    • Ensure the message button is held down for the entire duration of the message and released promptly afterward.
