4. Initial Setup and First Use
4.1 Unpacking and Cleaning
- Carefully remove all packaging materials and components from the box.
- Wash the filter holder, filter basket, drip tray, and removable grid in warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry.
- Wipe the exterior of the machine with a damp cloth. Do not immerse the main unit in water.
4.2 Priming the Machine
Before making your first espresso, it is important to prime the machine to remove any manufacturing residue and ensure proper operation:
- Fill the water reservoir with fresh, cold water up to the "4-cup" mark.
- Place the filter holder (without coffee) into the brewing head and lock it into place by turning it to the right.
- Place an empty cup or container under the filter holder.
- Ensure the steam nozzle is positioned over the drip tray or a separate cup.
- Plug the power cord into a grounded electrical outlet.
- Turn the On/Off switch to the "On" position. The indicator light will illuminate.
- Once the machine is heated (indicator light may change or turn off, refer to specific model instructions), turn the Brew/Steam selector knob to the "Brew" position. Allow all the water to flow through the filter holder into the cup.
- Turn the Brew/Steam selector knob to the "Off" position.
- Repeat this process with the steam function: turn the selector to "Steam" and allow steam to release for a few seconds, then turn off.
- Unplug the machine and allow it to cool completely. Discard the water.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Making Espresso
- Fill the water reservoir with fresh, cold water to the desired level (e.g., "2-cup" or "4-cup" mark).
- Add finely ground espresso coffee to the filter basket. Use the measuring spoon provided (one level spoon per cup).
- Gently tamp the coffee grounds with the tamper end of the measuring spoon. Do not over-tamp.
- Insert the filter holder with the filled filter basket into the brewing head. Align the handle with the "Open" symbol and turn it firmly to the right until it locks into the "Lock" position.
- Place one or two espresso cups on the drip tray directly under the filter holder spouts.
- Plug in the machine and turn the On/Off switch to "On". Allow the machine to preheat until the indicator light signals readiness.
- Turn the Brew/Steam selector knob to the "Brew" position. Espresso will begin to flow into your cups.
- Once the desired amount of espresso is brewed, turn the selector knob back to the "Off" position.
- Important Note: After brewing, the filter holder will be hot and under pressure. Allow the filter holder to cool for at least 2 minutes before attempting to remove it or re-insert it into the machine. This prevents scalding and ensures safety.
- Carefully remove the filter holder by turning it to the left. Discard the used coffee grounds.
5.2 Frothing Milk for Cappuccinos and Lattes
- Ensure the water reservoir has sufficient water.
- Fill a frothing pitcher with cold milk (dairy or non-dairy) to about one-third full.
- Turn the On/Off switch to "On".
- Once the machine is heated, turn the Brew/Steam selector knob to the "Steam" position. Allow a small amount of steam to release into the drip tray to clear any condensed water. Turn the selector back to "Off".
- Submerge the steam nozzle just below the surface of the milk in the pitcher.
- Turn the selector knob to the "Steam" position again. Move the pitcher up and down slightly to incorporate air and create froth.
- Once the milk is frothed to your desired consistency and temperature, turn the selector knob back to the "Off" position.
- Immediately wipe the steam nozzle with a damp cloth to prevent milk residue from drying.
6. Cleaning and Maintenance
6.1 Daily Cleaning
- After each use, unplug the machine and allow it to cool.
- Remove and empty the filter holder. Wash the filter holder and filter basket in warm, soapy water.
- Empty and clean the drip tray and grid.
- Wipe down the exterior of the machine with a damp cloth.
- Clean the steam nozzle immediately after frothing milk to prevent blockages. If blocked, use a small pin to clear the opening.
6.2 Descaling
Mineral deposits from water can build up over time and affect machine performance. Descale your espresso maker regularly, depending on water hardness and frequency of use (e.g., every 2-3 months).
- Prepare a descaling solution according to the descaler manufacturer's instructions, or use a mixture of white vinegar and water (1 part vinegar to 2 parts water).
- Fill the water reservoir with the descaling solution.
- Place a large container under the filter holder and steam nozzle.
- Turn the machine on and allow it to heat up.
- Run half of the solution through the brewing head by turning the selector to "Brew".
- Run the remaining half of the solution through the steam nozzle by turning the selector to "Steam".
- Turn off the machine and let it sit for 15-20 minutes.
- Empty the reservoir and rinse it thoroughly with fresh water.
- Fill the reservoir with fresh water and run two full cycles through both the brewing head and steam nozzle to rinse out any descaling solution residue.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your espresso maker, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No coffee flows out. | No water in reservoir; filter basket clogged; coffee too finely ground or over-tamped. | Fill reservoir; clean filter basket; use coarser grind or less tamping pressure. |
| Coffee flows too quickly / weak coffee. | Coffee too coarsely ground; not enough coffee; insufficient tamping. | Use finer grind; add more coffee; tamp more firmly. |
| No steam from nozzle. | Nozzle clogged; machine not hot enough; no water in reservoir. | Clean nozzle with a pin; allow machine to heat fully; fill reservoir. |
| Water leaks from machine. | Filter holder not properly locked; reservoir cap not sealed; machine needs descaling. | Ensure filter holder is locked; tighten reservoir cap; descale the machine. |
| Machine does not turn on. | Not plugged in; power outlet issue. | Check power cord connection; test outlet with another appliance. |
If the problem persists after trying these solutions, please contact KRUPS customer support.
