Setup and First Use

  1. Unpacking: Carefully remove all packaging materials and inspect the wok for any damage.
  2. Initial Cleaning: Before first use, wash the wok body, lid, and tempura rack in warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely. Do not immerse the temperature control probe or the electrical base in water.
  3. Seasoning the Wok: The wok features a seasoned coating. For optimal performance and to maintain the seasoned surface, it is recommended to lightly coat the interior cooking surface with a thin layer of cooking oil before each use, especially for the first few uses.
  4. Assembly: Place the wok body securely onto its stand. Insert the temperature control probe into the receptacle on the side of the wok, ensuring it is fully seated.
  5. Placement: Place the assembled wok on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from flammable materials.

Operating Instructions

The West Bend Electric Wok is designed for various cooking methods. Always ensure the temperature control probe is correctly inserted before plugging the unit into an electrical outlet.

General Cooking

  1. Add desired ingredients to the wok.
  2. Plug the temperature control probe into a standard 120V AC electrical outlet.
  3. Set the desired temperature using the control dial. The indicator light will illuminate, indicating the wok is heating.
  4. The indicator light will cycle on and off as the wok maintains the set temperature.
  5. When cooking is complete, turn the temperature control dial to "OFF" and unplug the unit from the outlet.

Stir-Frying

For stir-frying, preheat the wok to a high temperature (e.g., 375°F - 400°F or higher, depending on ingredients). Add a small amount of cooking oil. Add ingredients in batches to avoid overcrowding, ensuring even cooking and browning. Stir continuously until cooked to desired tenderness.

Tempura and Deep Frying

The wok can be used for deep frying. Fill the wok with cooking oil to a safe level, ensuring it does not exceed half the wok's depth. Preheat oil to the recommended temperature for your recipe (typically 350°F - 375°F). Use the included tempura rack to drain excess oil from fried items. Exercise extreme caution when deep frying with hot oil.

Steaming

To steam, add a small amount of water to the bottom of the wok. Place a heat-safe steaming rack (not included, unless specified) above the water level. Place food on the steaming rack, cover with the lid, and set the temperature to a medium-high setting to bring the water to a boil. Reduce heat to maintain a simmer and steam until food is cooked.

Care and Cleaning

Proper care and cleaning will extend the life of your West Bend Electric Wok.

  1. Always Unplug: Before cleaning, ensure the wok is unplugged from the electrical outlet and has cooled completely.
  2. Wok Body and Lid: Wash the wok body and lid in warm, soapy water. For stubborn food residue, allow the wok to soak for a short period. Use a non-abrasive sponge or cloth to clean the seasoned surface. Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately to prevent water spots and maintain the seasoned finish.
  3. Temperature Control Probe: Wipe the temperature control probe with a damp cloth. Do not immerse it in water or any other liquid.
  4. Dishwasher Safety: The wok body and lid are NOT dishwasher safe. Hand washing is required.
  5. Storage: Store the wok in a dry place.

Troubleshooting

If you experience issues with your West Bend Electric Wok, please consult the following common solutions:

  • Wok does not heat:
    • Ensure the temperature control probe is fully inserted into the wok's receptacle.
    • Check that the power cord is securely plugged into a working electrical outlet.
    • Verify the temperature control dial is set to a temperature above "OFF".
  • Food sticks to the surface:
    • Ensure the wok was properly seasoned with oil before use.
    • Use a small amount of cooking oil for each cooking session.
    • Avoid using metal utensils that can damage the seasoned surface.
  • Wok smokes excessively:
    • The temperature setting may be too high for the type of oil or food being cooked. Reduce the temperature.
    • Ensure the wok is clean and free of old food residue or oil buildup.
