4. System Components Overview
Your Monoprice 5.1 Home Theater Speaker System consists of the following components:
4.1. Satellite Speakers (x4)
These compact speakers are designed for front left, front right, surround left, and surround right channels. Each satellite speaker features one 3-inch cone and a 1/2-inch dome tweeter, providing clear mid-range and high-frequency audio. They are equipped with spring-loaded signal connectors for easy wiring.

4.2. Center Channel Speaker (x1)
The center channel speaker is crucial for dialogue clarity and anchors the soundstage. It features two 3-inch shielded mid-range cones. Plastic feet are included to help orient the speaker face vertically when placed on a flat surface.

4.3. Powered Subwoofer (x1)
The 8-inch powered subwoofer handles low-frequency effects, adding depth and impact to your audio. It features a 60-watt (RMS) amplifier, an 8-inch downward-firing cone, and includes adjustable crossover frequency and volume controls. It accepts both line-level and speaker-level inputs.

5. Setup and Installation
5.1. Speaker Placement
Optimal speaker placement is crucial for a balanced surround sound experience. Consider the following guidelines:
- Center Speaker: Place the center speaker directly above or below your television, centered horizontally. Use the included plastic feet to angle it towards the listening area if placed below.
- Front Satellite Speakers: Position the front left and right satellite speakers equidistant from your television and at approximately the same height as the center speaker. They should form an equilateral triangle with your primary listening position.
- Surround Satellite Speakers: Place the surround left and right satellite speakers to the sides or slightly behind your main listening position, ideally at or slightly above ear level.
- Subwoofer: The subwoofer's placement is less critical for imaging but can significantly impact bass response. Experiment with different locations in the room, such as a corner or near a wall, to find the best bass output.
5.2. Wiring Connections
Before making any connections, ensure your audio/video receiver and the subwoofer are powered off.
- Connecting Satellite and Center Speakers:
- Use high-quality speaker wire (up to 16 gauge recommended).
- Connect the positive (+) terminal (red) on each speaker to the positive (+) terminal on the corresponding channel output of your receiver.
- Connect the negative (-) terminal (black) on each speaker to the negative (-) terminal on the corresponding channel output of your receiver.
- Ensure all connections are secure and there are no stray wire strands that could cause a short circuit.

Image 5.1: Close-up view of the spring-loaded speaker wire terminals on a satellite or center speaker.
- Connecting the Powered Subwoofer:
- Line-Level Input (Recommended): If your receiver has a dedicated "Subwoofer Out" or "LFE Out" RCA jack, use the included RCA M/M stereo cable to connect this output to the "LINE IN" (L or R) jack on the subwoofer's rear panel. For optimal performance, a Y-adapter (not included) can be used to connect to both L and R inputs.
- Speaker-Level Input: If your receiver lacks a dedicated subwoofer output, you can use the speaker-level inputs. Connect the speaker outputs from your receiver to the "HI LEVEL IN" terminals on the subwoofer, then connect the "FROM AMPLIFIER" terminals on the subwoofer to your front left and right speakers. Ensure correct polarity.
- Connect the subwoofer's power cord to a standard AC outlet.
5.3. Mounting Satellite Speakers
The included C-brackets allow for wall mounting of the satellite speakers. You will need to provide your own hardware (screws, anchors) suitable for your wall type.
- Attach the C-bracket to the desired wall location using appropriate mounting hardware (not included). Ensure it is securely fastened.
- Attach the sound insulating foam pads to the back of the satellite speaker where it will contact the bracket.
- Align the satellite speaker with the C-bracket and secure it using the provided mounting screws.
6. Operation
6.1. Initial Power-Up and Receiver Settings
- After all connections are made, plug in the subwoofer's power cord and turn on its power switch.
- Power on your audio/video receiver.
- Access your receiver's speaker setup menu.
- Set all satellite and center speakers to "Small" or "Crossover" mode.
- Set the subwoofer to "On" or "Yes".
- Adjust the crossover frequency on your receiver, typically between 80 Hz and 120 Hz, to blend smoothly with the subwoofer.
- Run your receiver's automatic calibration system (if available) for optimal level and delay settings.
6.2. Subwoofer Controls
The subwoofer's rear panel features controls for fine-tuning its performance:
- VOLUME: Adjusts the output level of the subwoofer. Start at a low setting and gradually increase until the bass blends seamlessly with the satellite speakers.
- FREQ (Crossover Frequency): This control adjusts the upper frequency limit of the subwoofer. If your receiver has a crossover setting, it is generally recommended to set the subwoofer's FREQ control to its maximum (250 Hz) and manage the crossover through your receiver. If your receiver does not have a crossover setting, adjust this control to blend the subwoofer's output with your main speakers (typically between 80 Hz and 120 Hz).
- POWER (ON/OFF/AUTO):
- ON: The subwoofer remains continuously powered on.
- OFF: The subwoofer is powered off.
- AUTO: The subwoofer will automatically power on when an audio signal is detected and enter standby mode after a period of inactivity. This is the recommended setting for most users.
7. Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your speaker system, follow these maintenance guidelines:
- Cleaning: Dust the speakers regularly with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn marks, lightly dampen the cloth with water. Avoid using harsh chemicals, solvents, or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the finish.
- Placement: Avoid placing speakers in direct sunlight or near heat sources, which can cause discoloration or damage to components.
- Ventilation: Ensure the subwoofer's ventilation openings are clear of obstructions to prevent overheating.
- Connections: Periodically check all speaker wire connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion.
8. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your speaker system, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No sound from any speaker. | Receiver is off or input is incorrect. Speaker wires are disconnected. | Ensure receiver is on and correct input is selected. Check all speaker wire connections at both the receiver and speakers. |
| No sound from a specific satellite or center speaker. | Loose or incorrect speaker wire connection. Speaker channel disabled in receiver settings. | Check the speaker wire connection for that specific speaker. Verify speaker settings in your receiver's menu. |
| No bass from the subwoofer. | Subwoofer not powered on. RCA cable loose or incorrect. Subwoofer volume too low. Crossover frequency set too low. Subwoofer disabled in receiver settings. | Ensure subwoofer power switch is ON or AUTO. Check RCA cable connection. Increase subwoofer VOLUME. Adjust crossover frequency on subwoofer or receiver. Enable subwoofer in receiver settings. |
| Distorted sound. | Volume too high. Loose connections. Speaker damage. | Reduce volume on receiver and subwoofer. Check all speaker wire connections. If distortion persists at moderate volumes, contact support. |
| Humming or buzzing from subwoofer. | Ground loop issue. Poor quality RCA cable. Interference from other electronics. | Try plugging the subwoofer into a different electrical outlet. Use a shielded RCA cable. Move the subwoofer or other electronics to reduce interference. |
