1. Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for the Merten MEG5172-0000 Universal 2-Port Dimmer Module. This device is designed for controlling various lighting loads, including ohmic, inductive, and capacitive types such as incandescent bulbs, dimmable wound transformers, and electronic transformers. It features automatic load detection, soft start functionality, and a memory function to recall the last dimming level. The module supports external control via two PlusLink inputs and is built with overload and short-circuit protection.
2. Safety Information
WARNING: Risk of electric shock. Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with all local and national electrical codes.
- Always disconnect power at the circuit breaker or fuse box before installing or servicing the dimmer module.
- Do not exceed the specified electrical ratings (voltage, current, power).
- Ensure all wire connections are secure and properly insulated.
- Do not use with mixed loads simultaneously.
- This device is designed for indoor use only.
3. Product Overview
The Merten MEG5172-0000 is a compact universal dimmer module designed for flush-mounted installations. It features two independent outputs for controlling separate lighting circuits.

4. Setup & Installation
The Merten MEG5172-0000 dimmer module is designed for flush-mounted installation using both screws and claws for secure fitting in a standard wall box. It operates on a 2-conductor system, meaning a neutral conductor is not required for its basic operation.
4.1 Wiring Connections
- Power Disconnection: Before starting any wiring, ensure the main power supply to the circuit is turned off at the circuit breaker.
- Identify Terminals: Refer to Figure 3.1 for the location of the screw terminals. The module includes terminals for Line (L), and two load outputs (1 and 2). It also has PlusLink inputs (PL1, PL2) for external control.
- Connect Line (L): Connect the live wire from the power supply to the 'L' terminal.
- Connect Loads: Connect the load wires (to your lights) to the respective output terminals (1 and 2).
- PlusLink Connections (Optional): If using external control, connect the PlusLink wires to the PL1 and PL2 inputs as per your system's requirements.
- Secure Wiring: Ensure all wires are securely fastened in their respective screw terminals. The maximum connection cross-section is 2 x 2.5 mm2.
4.2 Mounting
- Insert the dimmer module into the flush-mounted wall box.
- Use the integrated claws and screws to firmly secure the module within the wall box.
- Once secured, attach the appropriate Merten cover plate and dimmer knob (sold separately) to complete the installation.

5. Operating Instructions
The Merten MEG5172-0000 functions as both a switch and a dimmer for two independent outputs. It automatically detects the type of connected load (ohmic, inductive, or capacitive) to optimize dimming performance.
5.1 Basic Operation
- Switching On/Off: A short press on the connected dimmer control (e.g., a push-button or rotary dimmer) will switch the lights on or off.
- Dimming: A long press or rotation (depending on the control type) will adjust the light intensity.
- Soft Start: The dimmer features a soft start function, gradually increasing light intensity when switched on, which extends bulb life.
- Memory Function: The module remembers the last set dimming level and will return to it when switched on again.
5.2 External Control (PlusLink)
The dimmer module can be controlled externally via its two PlusLink inputs (PL1 and PL2). This allows integration into more complex control systems or multi-point switching/dimming setups. Refer to the documentation of your PlusLink control system for specific configuration and operation details.
5.3 Load Detection
The universal dimmer automatically detects the connected load type. It is important to note that the module is not designed for mixed loads on a single output. Ensure each output controls a consistent load type.

Figure 5.1: This image illustrates the potential for smart control of lighting, possibly through an app connected to a compatible system that integrates with the dimmer module's PlusLink functionality.
6. Maintenance
The Merten MEG5172-0000 dimmer module requires minimal maintenance. Follow these guidelines to ensure optimal performance and longevity:
- Cleaning: Ensure power is off before cleaning. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the surface of the dimmer control. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents, or excessive moisture.
- Inspection: Periodically inspect the dimmer and associated wiring for any signs of damage, loose connections, or overheating. If any issues are found, disconnect power and consult a qualified electrician.
- No User-Serviceable Parts: The internal components of the dimmer module are not user-serviceable. Do not attempt to open or repair the module.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Merten MEG5172-0000 dimmer module, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:
- No Light/Dimmer Not Responding:
- Check if the circuit breaker has tripped.
- Ensure all wiring connections are secure (refer to Section 4.1).
- Verify that the light bulb(s) are functional and correctly installed.
- Confirm that the connected load type is compatible with a universal dimmer.
- Lights Flicker or Hum:
- Ensure the connected load is within the specified power range (50-220VA per channel).
- Verify that the load type is not mixed (e.g., do not combine incandescent with LED on the same output).
- Some LED bulbs may require specific dimmers or may not be fully compatible with all universal dimmers. Consider trying different compatible bulbs.
- Overload/Short-Circuit Protection: The dimmer module is equipped with built-in overload and short-circuit protection. If the dimmer stops functioning, it might be due to one of these protections activating. Disconnect power, check for any faults in the wiring or load, rectify the issue, and then restore power.
- External Control Issues: If using PlusLink, ensure the external control system is correctly configured and communicating with the dimmer module. Consult the PlusLink system's manual.
If problems persist after attempting these steps, contact a qualified electrician or Schneider Electric customer support.
