Introduction
This instruction manual provides essential information for the safe and effective installation, operation, and maintenance of your Satco S5831 250-Watt Clear Universal Mount Mogul Base BT28 Metal Halide Lamp. Please read this manual thoroughly before use and retain it for future reference.
The Satco S5831 is a 250-watt metal halide lamp designed for high-intensity discharge (HID) lighting applications. It features a clear finish, a Mogul (E39) base, and a BT28 bulb shape, providing 4200K color temperature light.
Safety Information
WARNING: Risk of Electric Shock, Fire, or Burns.
- Always turn off power to the fixture and allow the lamp to cool completely before installation, removal, or maintenance.
- This lamp operates at high temperatures and pressures. Use only in fixtures designed for metal halide lamps and equipped with appropriate ballasts and enclosures.
- Do not use this lamp with dimmers unless specifically rated for HID lamps.
- Avoid touching the lamp with bare hands. Oils from skin can cause hot spots and reduce lamp life. Use a clean cloth or gloves.
- If the outer envelope of the lamp is broken, immediately turn off power and replace the lamp. Do not operate a lamp with a broken outer envelope.
- This lamp produces ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Use in fixtures with a protective lens or shield to prevent exposure.
- Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with all local and national electrical codes.
Setup
Pre-Installation Checks
- Ensure the fixture is compatible with a 250-watt metal halide lamp and has a Mogul (E39) base.
- Verify that the ballast is appropriate for a 250-watt metal halide lamp (M58/E).
- Confirm that the power supply to the fixture is turned off at the circuit breaker.
- Inspect the lamp for any visible damage before installation. Do not install damaged lamps.
Installation Steps
- Ensure the power is off and the fixture is cool.
- Carefully remove the new lamp from its packaging. Avoid touching the glass with bare hands.
- Screw the lamp firmly into the Mogul (E39) base socket of the fixture. Do not overtighten.
- Ensure the lamp is seated correctly and securely.
- Close the fixture's protective cover or lens, if applicable.
- Restore power to the fixture at the circuit breaker.

Operating
Initial Startup and Warm-up
Upon initial power-up, metal halide lamps require a warm-up period to reach full brightness and stable color. This process typically takes 2-5 minutes. During this time, the light output and color may fluctuate.
Normal Operation
Once warmed up, the Satco S5831 lamp will provide consistent, high-intensity light. Metal halide lamps are designed for continuous operation. Frequent on/off cycling can reduce lamp life.
Re-strike Time
If the lamp is turned off, it requires a cool-down period before it can be re-ignited. This re-strike time can range from 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the lamp and ambient temperature. Attempting to re-strike a hot lamp prematurely can damage the lamp or ballast.
Maintenance
Cleaning
Periodically, ensure the lamp and fixture lens are clean. Dust and debris can reduce light output. Always turn off power and allow the lamp to cool before cleaning. Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
Lamp Replacement
Metal halide lamps have a finite lifespan. Replace the lamp when it reaches the end of its rated life, or if it exhibits signs of failure such as flickering, cycling on and off, or significantly reduced light output. Always replace with a lamp of the same type and wattage (Satco S5831 or equivalent).
Disposal
Metal halide lamps contain small amounts of mercury and other materials that require proper disposal. Do not dispose of lamps in regular household waste. Consult your local waste management authority for proper recycling or disposal procedures in your area.
