4. Setup

The Medline Lightweight Foldable Transport Wheelchair requires no assembly and is ready for use upon unpacking.

  1. Unfolding the Wheelchair:

    Grasp both armrests and pull them apart until the wheelchair is fully open. Press down firmly on the seat upholstery from the sides until it is flat and locked into position.

  2. Attaching Footrests:

    Align the footrest pins with the receiving tubes on the front of the wheelchair frame. Insert the pins and swing the footrests into position. Ensure they are securely locked.

  3. Checking Brakes:

    Before placing a user in the chair, test the hand brakes by squeezing them to slow the chair and pushing them down to lock the rear wheels. Ensure they function correctly.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Seating the User

  1. Ensure the wheelchair is on a flat, stable surface.
  2. Engage both rear-wheel manual locking brakes by pushing down on the hand brake levers until they click into the locked position.
  3. Swing the footrests out of the way or detach them if necessary to allow clear access for the user.
  4. Assist the user to sit safely in the chair.
  5. Once seated, swing the footrests back into position and ensure the user's feet are comfortably and securely placed on them.
  6. Fasten the seat belt securely around the user.

5.2 Moving the Wheelchair

  1. Release the rear-wheel manual locking brakes by pulling up on the hand brake levers.
  2. Grasp the push handles firmly.
  3. Push the wheelchair forward or backward as needed. Use the hand brakes to control speed, especially on inclines or declines, by gently squeezing the levers.
  4. To turn, apply slight pressure to one handle while pushing the other, or gently pivot the chair.

5.3 Folding for Transport or Storage

  1. Ensure the user is safely out of the wheelchair.
  2. Detach or swing away the footrests.
  3. Pull up on the center of the seat upholstery to begin folding the chair inward.
  4. Continue to fold until the chair is compact. The swing-away footrests can be locked in place for more compact storage.
  5. The folded chair can then be lifted into a car trunk or back seat.
