1. Introduction
This manual provides detailed instructions for assembling the TAMIYA Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik Model Kit (1/48 Scale), model number TM61113. This kit allows for the construction of a highly detailed replica of the heavily armored Soviet ground-attack aircraft, specifically the late production Type 3 variant featuring metal pattern swept outer wing panels. Please read all instructions carefully before beginning assembly.
2. Safety Information
- Adult Supervision: This model kit is recommended for ages 21 and up due to small parts and the use of adhesives and paints. Adult supervision is advised for younger builders.
- Ventilation: Work in a well-ventilated area when using paints, glues, and thinners.
- Small Parts: Keep small parts away from children and pets to prevent choking hazards.
- Sharp Tools: Exercise caution when using hobby knives, clippers, and other sharp tools.
- Chemical Safety: Follow all safety instructions provided with adhesives and paints. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
3. Assembly Instructions
Before starting, carefully inspect all parts against the parts list to ensure everything is present and undamaged. Remove parts from sprues using a hobby knife or clippers, cleaning any excess plastic (flash) with a file or sandpaper.
3.1 Cockpit and Gunner's Station
Begin by assembling the well-appointed cockpit and gunner's station. This includes the optional seated pilot and gunner figures. Pay attention to the instrument faces and seatbelt markings provided on the decals.
3.2 Engine and Cowling
Assemble the basic engine block, followed by the multi-part cowling intake duct, radiator, and oil coolers. Ensure proper alignment for a smooth fit.
3.3 Fuselage and Wings
Join the fuselage halves, ensuring the cockpit and engine assemblies are correctly positioned. Attach the wings, noting the excellent engraved panel lines and subtle control surface fabric-over-frame effects. The kit features late production Type 3 variant wings with metal pattern swept outer wing panels.
3.4 Landing Gear
Assemble the detailed wheel bays and undercarriage components. Ensure the landing gear is securely attached and aligned for a stable model.
3.5 Propeller and Canopy
Assemble the single-piece 3-blade propeller with its separate spinner assembly. Attach the segmented optional position canopy. Use the preprinted canopy mask material for precise painting.
3.6 Armament and Exterior Fittings
Install the filigree control surface actuators and other exterior fittings. Attach the underwing bomb sway braces. Select and install your preferred armament from the included options:
- 3 kinds of rocket launcher parts
- 2 types of rocket launcher rails
- FAB-100kg bombs (2 units)
- FAB-250kg bombs (2 units)
- RS-132 rockets (4 units)

4. Finishing and Detailing
4.1 Painting
Refer to the painting reference provided in the kit for accurate color schemes. The recommended paint type is Oil. Apply paint in thin, even coats for best results. Use the preprinted canopy mask material to protect clear parts during painting.
4.2 Decal Application
The kit includes decals for three VVS aircraft:
- 'White 1' of the 6th Gv OShAP
- 'White 07' of the 566th ShAP at Leningrad during 1944
- 'White 12' of the 16th VA at Berlin during April 1945
Carefully cut out each decal. Dip in water for a few seconds until it slides freely from the backing paper. Position the decal on the model and gently slide the backing paper away. Use a soft cloth to blot excess water and remove air bubbles. Apply a decal setting solution if desired for a seamless finish.
5. Maintenance
Once assembled and painted, your model requires minimal maintenance. To keep your TAMIYA Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik looking its best:
- Cleaning: Dust the model regularly with a soft, dry brush or a gentle air blower. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials, which can damage paint and decals.
- Storage: Store the model in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent warping or fading of colors. Display cases can help protect against dust and accidental damage.
- Handling: Handle the model by its main body or wings, avoiding delicate parts like antennas, landing gear, or armament to prevent breakage.
6. Troubleshooting Common Assembly Issues
While TAMIYA kits are known for their precision, minor issues can sometimes arise during assembly. Here are some common challenges and solutions:
- Parts Not Fitting: If parts do not fit perfectly, check for excess plastic (flash) on the edges and carefully trim or sand it away. Dry-fit parts before applying glue.
- Small Parts Breakage: Delicate parts, such as antennae or landing gear struts, can be fragile. Handle them with extreme care. If a part breaks, use a small amount of plastic cement to reattach it, or consider reinforcing it with a thin wire if possible.
- Decal Silvering: If decals show a "silvering" effect (air trapped under the clear film), apply a decal setting solution to help them conform better to the surface and eliminate air bubbles. Ensure the surface is glossy before applying decals.
- Paint Issues: If paint appears uneven or too thick, ensure you are applying thin coats. Humidity and temperature can affect paint drying; always follow paint manufacturer recommendations.
