  • Temperature Compensation: Automatically adjusts charging parameters based on ambient temperature, ensuring optimal charging performance in extreme hot or cold conditions (from -22°F to 113°F).
  • Battery Desulfation: Features a mode to activate desulfation if battery sulfation is detected, helping to restore battery capacity.
  • Soft Start Mode: Protects deeply discharged batteries from initial charge stress.
  • Exercising Feature: Introduces a load on the battery to simulate active use, then recharges it, helping to maintain optimum battery condition during storage.

Setup

1. Initial Inspection

Before use, inspect the charger and its cables for any signs of damage. Ensure all connections are clean and free of corrosion. The unit features integrated cord and clamp storage for convenience.

2. Connecting to Battery

  1. Ensure the charger is unplugged from the AC power outlet.
  2. Connect the red positive (+) clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the battery.
  3. Connect the black negative (-) clamp to the negative (-) terminal of the battery.
  4. For vehicle batteries, connect the negative clamp to a non-painted metal part of the vehicle chassis away from the battery and fuel lines.

3. Powering On

Once the battery clamps are securely connected, plug the charger's AC power cord into a suitable electrical outlet. The charger will power on and begin its initial energizing mode.

Operating Instructions

Charging Modes and Rates

The PL2310 offers various settings to optimize charging for different battery types and conditions. Use the "VOLTS" button to select between 6V, 12V, or Power Supply mode. Use the "TYPE" button to select Standard, AGM, or LiFePO4 battery types. Use the "RATE" button to select the desired charge rate: 2A, 6A, or 10A.

Multi-Phase Charging Process

The charger employs a proprietary multi-stage charging process designed to optimally charge and maintain batteries. This process includes several phases:

  1. Phase 1: Energizing - The charger determines the best charging path for the connected battery. This may involve a soft start mode for deeply discharged batteries to protect them from initial charge stress.
  2. Phase 2: Fast Charge - In most cases, the charger enters this stage to rapidly charge the battery.
  3. Phase 3: Absorption - The charging current decreases as the battery approaches full charge.
  4. Phase 4: Completion - The battery is brought to full charge.
  5. Phase 5: Resting - Once fully charged, the charger's output is virtually turned off, only occasionally monitoring battery condition. This reduces chemical reaction within the battery, extending its lifespan compared to traditional maintenance modes.
  6. Phase 6: Exercising - The charger introduces a controlled load on the battery to simulate active use. This feature helps maintain the battery's optimum condition, especially during long-term storage.
  7. Phase 7: Restoring - After the exercising phase, the battery is recharged to full capacity.

Power Supply Mode

In Power Supply (PS) mode, the charger provides a steady power output (up to 10 amps for the PL2310) with the goal of maintaining a stable system voltage of 14.1V DC. This is useful for preventing battery drain when performing vehicle diagnostics or programming that requires continuous power without drawing from the vehicle's battery.

Status Indicators

The Status Center on the charger provides clear indications of the charging process:

  • Charging in Progress: Indicates the battery is actively being charged.
  • Charging Complete: Illuminates when the battery has reached full charge.
  • Polarity: Lights up if the battery clamps are connected with incorrect polarity. Disconnect and re-connect correctly.
  • Error: Indicates an issue with the battery or charging process, such as a short circuit or unsafe battery conditions.

Maintenance

General Care

Keep the charger clean and dry. Wipe down the exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Ensure the cooling fan vents are clear of obstructions to prevent overheating. Regularly inspect cables and clamps for wear or damage.

Storage

Store the charger in a cool, dry place when not in use. Utilize the integrated cord and clamp storage features to keep cables organized and prevent damage. For long-term battery storage, the charger's maintenance modes (including the exercising feature) help keep batteries in optimal condition.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Charger not turning on. No AC power, loose connection. Check AC outlet, ensure power cord is fully plugged in.
"Polarity" indicator is lit. Incorrect battery clamp connection. Disconnect charger from AC, then re-connect red clamp to positive (+) and black clamp to negative (-).
"Error" indicator is lit. Battery fault (e.g., shorted cell) or unsafe condition. Disconnect charger. Inspect battery for damage. If battery is severely damaged, it may not be chargeable.
Battery not charging. Battery is deeply discharged (below 0.0V) or severely sulfated. The charger has a soft start and desulfation mode for these conditions. Allow the charger to attempt to recover the battery. If it fails, the battery may be beyond recovery.

Note: The PL2310 is a charger and maintainer, not a jump starter. It will not provide enough current to start a vehicle with a completely dead battery.
