The Rusco FS1-1/2-500 is a high-quality polyester filter replacement element designed for 1-1/2 inch filter systems. This reusable screen is compatible with both Vu-Flow 1-1/2 inch T-Style filter systems and Rusco 1-1/2 inch Spin-Down Sediment filter systems. Manufactured by Rusco/Vu-Flow, this filter element is engineered to effectively remove sediment from water, ensuring cleaner water flow.

Key features include:

  • Designed as a direct replacement element for 1-1/2" filter systems.
  • Features a 500 mesh (30 micron) polyester screen for fine filtration.
  • Reusable design allows for cleaning and extended use.

2. Setup and Installation

This filter screen is a replacement component and requires an existing compatible filter housing (Rusco 1-1/2" Spin-Down or Vu-Flow 1-1/2" T-Style filter system) for installation. Ensure the water supply to the filter system is turned off and pressure is relieved before proceeding.

  1. Prepare the Housing: Carefully unscrew and remove the filter housing sump from the filter head.
  2. Remove Old Element: Extract the old filter element from the housing. Dispose of the old element responsibly.
  3. Inspect Housing: Clean the inside of the filter housing sump and inspect the O-rings for any damage or wear. Replace O-rings if necessary to ensure a watertight seal.
  4. Insert New Element: Carefully insert the new Rusco FS1-1/2-500 polyester filter screen into the housing, ensuring it seats properly at the bottom.
  5. Reassemble: Screw the filter housing sump back onto the filter head, hand-tightening until snug. Avoid over-tightening.
  6. Restore Water Supply: Slowly turn on the water supply to the filter system, checking for any leaks. If leaks occur, turn off the water, re-check the O-ring and filter element seating, and re-tighten.

Important: Always ensure the water supply is off and pressure is relieved before opening the filter housing to prevent injury or water damage.

3. Operating Instructions

Once installed, the Rusco FS1-1/2-500 filter screen operates passively as water flows through your system. Its primary function is to capture sediment particles larger than 30 microns, preventing them from entering your plumbing or appliances.

No active operation is required for the filter screen itself. The efficiency of the filter depends on the water quality and the amount of sediment present. Regular monitoring of water flow and pressure can indicate when maintenance is required.

4. Maintenance

The Rusco FS1-1/2-500 filter screen is reusable and designed for easy cleaning. Regular maintenance is crucial to maintain optimal water flow and filtration efficiency.

  1. Frequency: The cleaning frequency depends on the sediment load in your water. In areas with high sediment, cleaning may be required weekly or monthly. In areas with low sediment, cleaning may be less frequent. A noticeable drop in water pressure is a key indicator that cleaning is needed.
  2. Cleaning Procedure:
    • Turn off the main water supply to the filter system and relieve pressure.
    • Unscrew and remove the filter housing sump.
    • Carefully remove the filter screen element.
    • Rinse the filter screen thoroughly under running water, preferably from the inside out, to dislodge trapped sediment. A soft brush can be used to gently scrub the mesh if necessary.
    • Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials, as these can damage the polyester mesh.
    • Inspect the screen for any tears or damage. If damaged, the screen should be replaced.
    • Reinstall the clean filter screen and reassemble the housing as described in the "Setup and Installation" section.
    • Slowly restore water supply and check for leaks.

5. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Reduced Water Flow/Pressure Clogged filter screen due to excessive sediment. Clean the filter screen as per the maintenance instructions. Increase cleaning frequency if problem persists.
Water Leaks from Housing
  • Improperly seated O-ring.
  • Damaged O-ring.
  • Housing not tightened sufficiently.
  • Turn off water, open housing, re-seat O-ring properly.
  • Replace O-ring if cracked or worn.
  • Ensure housing is hand-tightened securely.
Sediment in Filtered Water
  • Damaged filter screen (tear or hole).
  • Filter screen not properly seated.
  • Sediment bypass due to improper installation.
  • Inspect filter screen for damage; replace if necessary.
