Operating Instructions

Holding the Harmonica

Hold the harmonica with the numbers facing up and the lowest notes (left side) to your left. Cup your hands around the harmonica to create a resonant chamber, which can be opened and closed to achieve various tonal effects.

Producing Sound (Blow and Draw)

The harmonica produces sound by blowing air into the holes (blow notes) and drawing air out of the holes (draw notes). Each hole has two reeds, one for blowing and one for drawing, producing different pitches.

  • Blow Notes: Exhale gently into the desired hole.
  • Draw Notes: Inhale gently from the desired hole.

Playing Single Notes

To play single notes, you need to isolate one hole. Two common techniques are:

  • Lip Pursing: Pucker your lips as if you are going to kiss, and place them over a single hole. Blow or draw gently.
  • Tongue Blocking: Place your mouth over three or four holes, then use your tongue to block the holes to the left of the desired note, allowing only one hole to sound.

Bending Notes

The responsive reeds of the Special 20 allow for note bending, a fundamental technique in blues and rock harmonica playing. Bending is achieved by changing the shape of your mouth and throat cavity while drawing or blowing, altering the pitch of the reed. This technique requires practice.

Maintenance and Care

Proper care will extend the life and performance of your harmonica.

  • Cleaning After Use: After playing, tap the harmonica gently against your palm to dislodge any moisture or debris from the reeds.
  • Drying: Allow the harmonica to air dry completely before placing it back in its case. Do not use heat to dry it, as this can damage the reeds or comb.
  • Storage: Store your harmonica in its provided case to protect it from dust and physical damage.
  • Deep Cleaning: For a more thorough cleaning, the harmonica can be disassembled. The plastic comb and stainless steel covers can be gently rinsed with lukewarm water. Avoid using harsh chemicals or detergents. Ensure all parts are completely dry before reassembly.

Troubleshooting

Muffled or Non-Responsive Notes

If a note sounds muffled or doesn't respond, it may be due to:

  • Excess Moisture: Tap the harmonica firmly against your palm to clear excess saliva.
  • Debris: Small particles of food or dust can get lodged under a reed. If tapping doesn't work, a careful visual inspection and gentle removal with a thin, non-abrasive tool (like a toothpick) may be necessary after disassembling the harmonica.
  • Damaged Reed: In rare cases, a reed may be bent or broken. This typically requires professional repair or replacement.
